Default Quick fix for the stock exhaust rattle

Finally had a few minutes to look at what the heck was rattling under the car today. The rattle was the typical decelerating rattle coming from the exhaust. I put it up on the lift and put this fix in....

1) pic of the offending rattle. The springs here rattle against their hangers. You can tell just by shaking the exhaust here and it will sound like a storm door on farm house.

2) Got these springs at lowes for 2 bucks. They are very tight and will be used to hold the two H pipe springs together.

3) You have to unbolt the springs to put the holder spring on.

4) Put the sping on the lowest coil, and hand thread the bolts.

5) Tighten them down to 37lbs, and you will be rattle free.

I ran this car for a few miles and have noticed NONE of the rattles that were there before.

Hope that helps....

(edit: Now that this is fixed I ordered my Dynatech long tubes with the hi-flow cats/x pipe. Time for some mods on the new Z! )

Other things ordered (gonna have a fun weekend).

Vararam Intake
Hurst Billet plus shifter
Hawk pads (HPS)
and of course, the hood seal

Let it breathe....

I have a rattle on ACCELERATION, not deceleration.

Your fix sounds like a good idea - I will try it.....

Now if I can just find the "clunk" noise.

Should be worth a shot... The package came with two springs, I only needed one. If you want it, PM me and I'll send it to you.

That a great "how to" thread you posted there.
That's the way mods should be posted (with pics and explinations)

I have a rattle on acceleration. Would you mind sending me that spring? Should only cost a stamp or two. I'd like to try this, and thanks for the write-up with pix!

Thats

My solution was to take some rubber hose of sufficient diameter and shove it up into the springs.

I can't tell you how many times I have been under the car trying to solve that rattle. And here I thought it was only my vette that suffered the rattle.

I'll try the rubber hose, because I went to put the spring on, and found two lines running right between the springs (I have an A4).

good idea

I remember reading this thread a while ago when I first started hearing a rattle. Happened just as you say, under acceleration at low rpms. Turned out to be a loose piece on the o2 sensor. Read through other threads on here and suggestions were to apply high temp epoxy to prevent the metal piece from moving. Don't know if this is your problem, but it's a possibility!

I have a rattle clunk under the car and my front d side tire is hitting the inner front fender, My brother told me to change the ball joints? But I also notice the LG headers had a bole missing from the support.

Another reason why I love this forum! If the problem arises on mine, I know the cost-effective fix. Well done, and thanks!

Great idea! I also have the decel rattle on my Z06. If I disconnect the rear springs it goes away but I don't want to run it like that. I'll try your solution. Thanks.
