as any one with a c4 vette knows the frame flexes a lot especially a rag top they have a x brace has anyone strengthened it by boxing it its 4 inches wide so you can box it with some flat stock steel .and even ad some cross braces to make it stronger.has anyone done it and did it make a difference was it worth the effort, thanks and merry christmas to all
Funny you should ask. I boxed my X-frame with 1/4" steel and it not only stiffened the assembly, but it gave me more jacking points. It added a few pounds, but the weight is well below the CG of the Vette. I also added R-D Racing's cross bar and camber brace and it is as stiff as any C4 if not stiffer. No wobbles after hitting ruts in the road and I'm satisfied with its autocross handling.
I boxed the x-brace I have on my coupe and not only does it make a noticeable difference but the brace doesn't get bent up as easily on bumps. Now it just slides across instead of getting hung up and bent.
I only used 1/8" flat stock, approximately the same thickness as the brace itself.
I boxed mine using sheet metal the same thickness as the brace. Definitely made a big difference in the strength of the brace. That coupled with a homemade cross brace and a camber brace has really solidified the feel of my car.
