I've been away for a couple years. I'm back for your help. I took my '96 out yesterday for a cruise. I noticed 'SYS' flashes on the odometer every minute or so. What is this? Something need servicing? The car drove fine. Any ideas?

I attributed it to the charging system. I got the same warning then the next morning I found my battery was dead. After recharging the battery I noticed the interior lights were still on. I found that door switch stuck and drained the battery overnight. Since I haven't seen the warning since, I thougt it indicated some sort of unusual electrical drain was detected. I would think that a failing alternator could show the same since the system would not be fully recharging.
Thanks Guys! OK, it's the battery then. The battery is about 6 yrs old now and I had to charge it last month because I hadn't driven it in about 3 months. I was planning to get another battery soon. Even thought it started up fine and was showing ~14V, I guess it's time to splurge and get a new one! Thanks!
"SYS" indicates that one or more codes has been set in the CCM. It simply seems that weak batteries and aftermarket radios (they disturb the dimming circuit - mine does this but I haven't bothered to do the fix) are the most common cause that people post about.
You'll need to scroll to the end to find the correct ALDL pins to jump for '96. If my understanding is correct, any codes that will flash "SYS" can be seen this way, but you must keep in mind that '96 is OBDII and that this method does not access the PCM codes (these set the check engine light) as suggested by that site.
***CLIFF'S NOTES: Your battery may be old, but not necessarily bad. See what the code is first.***
That web site is good for showing how to get the codes. Post them so someone can tell you what they mean. If the SYS is still flashing, the codes will have a C ( Current.) in front of the number. If it is an H, it means History or old code. The low battery is a good bet. My book for a 93 shows 30 codes for just the CCM

I would check codes. My "SYS" light was the FX3 failed right shock actuator. My battery is also 6 years old batterys fine.
