Well I'm afraid we will have to let this one rest. One guy says he did whilst another(unfortunately deceased) said he did it. My money is on Lingenfelter.I can't see how he could have claimed this achievment for fifteen years or so without a peep from callaway but now he's not here to defend himself the story changes.

Well perhaps if you'd been plugged in a little longer you'd have known this topic has been around LONG before John died. Nice try...
This is a correct statement. A lot of misinformation out there. The track was NOT in Texas it was the Ohio Transportation Track which is a 7 mile oval track. This was the same track the the infamous "Gathering of Eagles" took place. However, the car was driven from Old Lyme, CT; eventually ripped an incredible 254.7MPH then driven back to Old Lyme, CT.
And this is not a typical Callaway. This was a purpose built car for this top end run. Nonetheless, an amazing car. Mr. Berry is the new owner and lives in Colorado. The Sledgehammer was '88-51.
The above is 100% accurate (254.76 mph). The engine in the car for this session was supplied by Callaway.

I've never seen a direct quote from John claiming that he built the engine that was in the car when it ran the 254. Several of us here at Callaway knew John personally. He was no liar.
Pointing this out is absolutely not intended to cast any dispersions on LPE's capabilities. They have built and continue to build very powerful engines.
Bottom line here in my opinion is both companies, LPE and Callaway Cars build amazing cars and share the same passasion for Corvettes, ...and we get to benifit from it!
Lets get it correct.Callaway built the car.Lingenfelter built the engine and drove the thing.Personally I think a greater achievment was Lingenfelters 298mph Firebird. Apparently aerodynamically less drag than a vette.
Anyway one of callaways guys drove it from connecticut to the TRC track in Ohio and back with no tickets!
Callaway built the car,I got that much right. The EDS ZR-1 was at Fort Stockton in Texas,I think.Brains not what it used to be,but then again it never was
