Default Run flat repair question

People are probably saying not another run flat tire thread (and I searched for this answer). My RR tire picked up a roofing nail last weekend and I noticed it was on 12psi today (I was about to go to a Corvette Club meeting). I got it fixed without a problem (didn't know about GY's policy for the first year). Sears did everything correct from what I could see. He even looked in the owner's manual for the jacking point, used a puck, took the tire off (took two of them), patched/plugged it and put it back on using a torque wrench. DT or GY is not opened past 6pm anyways.

I read some where on this site that run flats can only be patched once. If that is the case then I guess you are stuck with #2. Does anyone carry a compressor around to keep it aired up to get home (if you are more then 50 miles away)? I was thinking about doing that with the runflats anyway. Technically for a small leak you should be able to drive far safely. My tire leaked 15 PSI in about 3 days. And if run flats can only be repaired once then they are a possible handicap once they are repaired.

I had a tire fixed in Vegas once on a friend's Z06 and the store said they would not patch any tire more than twice...runflat or not. I think its a policy of an individual store..have never heard of it anywhere else. As to the compressor, I got a very small one at WalMart for $9.99 which works well, I keep it in the cubby in the trunk. For those who want to spend more, there are much more expensive ones also, perhaps one with a C6 logo on it! Most leaks are slow, when his Z06 had a flat, I used the GM supplied compressor in the trunk to pump up the tire, had no problem getting to the tire place with plenty of air to spare.

I think I'm going to buy an air compressor even with the run flats. Being stranded in the middle of Nevada would not be much fun. At least I could make it to the next town, filling it up a couple times if need be.

I carry a compressor for just that reason. You can repair more than once, just doesn't retain the speed rating - according to GY.

My thinking exactly...especially when we live where it could be 100 miles to the next town of any size!

That is the main reason I still run runflats and carry a coleman compressor in the trunk well box.

I thought the only way to fix a runflt was to have it plugged. I never had this problem with the vette but my bimmer had a nail and I had it plugged ... no issues ...

Plus isn't the whole issue of not being speed rated only a problem with non runflats and in case of a blow out which I thought was next to impossbile with a runflat due to the reinforcements within the tire

We like to take road trips to the middle of nowhere. I carry a small compressor to make sure I can get to somewhere without damaging the tire should I get something in it. The two 'flats' I've had so far have been very slow leaks so I could run them indefinitely by adding air every few hours.

It is a liability issue. I would plug my 400 dollar plus tire til it looked like a porcupine with all the plugs hanging out before I bought a new tire. I have plugged tires since I started driving and once done, have never had an issue with them leaking again. Plug away

Thanks for the advice everyone. I'm buying a small compressor just in case.

I'm leaning towards staying with run flats right now. It was nice to just drive down to the repair shop instead of filling up a non run flat. I only wish Michelin would step up with the Corvette size.

Per Goodyear's instructions, a Goodyear run flat can only be repaired once and still maintain its speed rating. Due to liability concerns, most shops will not knowingly violate this.

Goodyear Speed-Rated Tire Repair Limits
II. DETAILED POLICY - Puncture Repair of Goodyear Speed-Rated Tires

The puncture must be confined to the tread area only.
(See "Repair Area", item III-B).

Restrictions on the number and size of repairs must be followed.
(See "Puncture Repair Limits" table, item III-C).

A detailed repair procedure must be followed.
(See "Repair Procedure", item III-E).

A Goodyear speed-rated new tire repaired in strict accordance with items II-A, B & C, will retain its speed rating.

III. REPAIR PROCEDURE FOR SPEED-RATED TIRES

GENERAL
The objective of the puncture repair is to seal the tire against loss of inflation pressure and to prevent damage to the carcass from moisture. In all puncture repairs approved by Goodyear, the hole must be filled with a plug, and a patch covering the hole must be applied according to repair material manufacturer instructions to the inside of the tire. Never repair tires which are worn below 2/32" tread depth.

NOTE: No tire is to be repaired without first being removed from the rim.

REPAIR AREA
Repairing is limited to the tread area only within the outside grooves. No repairs are allowed in the tread area beyond the outside grooves or sidewall.

PUNCTURE REPAIR LIMITS
TIRE SPEED...............MAX. NUMBER...........MAX REPAIR
(SPEED SYMBOL)................................. ....DIAMETER
130 mph and over ...........1......................1/4 in. (6mm)
(H, V, Z)

Our cars come with a Goodyear Road Hazard Warranty:

WHAT IS COVERED AND FOR HOW LONG?
1. FREE REPLACEMENT
Any new Goodyear Run-Flat EMT tire removed from service
due to a covered warranty condition or rendered not
repairable due to a road hazard injury during the first 2/32"
treadwear or 12 months from date of purchase, whichever
occurs first, will be replaced at no charge. Mounting and
balancing are included. Repairable punctures will also be
repaired at no charge during this period. Without proof of
purchase, date of manufacture will be used to determine age.
2. PRORATED ADJUSTMENT
A tire not eligible for no-charge replacement that is
removed from service due to a covered warranty condition
or rendered not repairable due to a road hazard injury will
be replaced on a prorated basis.
HOW WILL PRORATED CHARGES BE CALCULATED?
Replacement price will be calculated by multiplying the tire’s
advertised retailer selling price at the time of adjustment by
the percentage of usable original tread that has been worn
off. You pay for mounting, balancing, and applicable taxes. If
a tire has a repairable puncture, and is not eligible for no-charge
coverage, you pay for the cost of the puncture repair.
EXAMPLE: If your disabled tire had an original 8/32" of
usable treadwear and is worn to 4/32" usable tread remaining,
you have used 50% and therefore must pay 50% of the
current advertised selling price of the replacement tire. If the
price of the new replacement tire is $160, the cost to you
would be $80 plus any additional charges such as mounting,
balancing and applicable taxes.

Hmm, I'll have to go look for that one. You wouldn't happen to have a brand name and model #, would you? Thanx.
