that is exactly the problem i found on my 64 when i did the first restore many years ago. the worm gear was worn out so the speedo worked great and the odo didn't work at all. i'm only interested in in how fast i'm going, not how far, so i just set the odo at 00099- that has got me some interesting comments over the years...

do you sell those gears and how much??
I can sell you the gear and magnet, the problem is that you need a to calibrate the magnet to the speedometer. you need a magnitizer this is a tool that charges and discharges the magnet. something most of you dont have. you realy need to let someone with the right equipment take care of this for you. thanks

Also, here is a picture of gear B. Old one on top. As you can see it has worn so bad that it no no longer functions.

And here is a close up of C. Still in good shape. I may re-use this gear as the replacement is plastic.

Also, I assume that if you replace A and B gears, you will need to get the speedo head re-calibrated??
A: is your magnet first worm
B: is your second worm this is the one that always should be steel not plastic.
C : is your third worm gear is should be steel as well
GM used steel worms because it is the most durable not because it was the cheepest it was done for a reason and to get the most use out of your speedometer you should use steel. Plastic will not last.................................... ..............

This is very informative!

Here is my speedo quirk.

I had my cluster rebuilt by one of the well advertised vendors. When I got it back into the car it worked perfectly until it hit 199 miles on the tripometer. Then the odometer and tripometer quit working. Under warranty, I sent the cluster back for repair. Now it works fine except I am unable to reset the tripometer. The reset cable has no effect at all on the tripometer. Not even a wiggle. I assume that the **** should be pushed upward and turned clockwise in order to reset to zero. Am I correct?

Ok, I've got the same odometer problem that everyone seems to have...speed works, odometer doesnt. Sure enough, the 2nd worm gear is worn out. So I bought the LICS kit, but I've got two problems: The replacement #1 gear doesnt have a sleeve on the shaft...do I need to reuse the original one? That thing is pure evil and refuses to come off. The other problem is that the magnet isnt magnetized.

Is that really something I need to take to a shop, or will those little magnetizers designed to make screwdrivers magnetic work?

I took a look at my old speedo today and I can not figure out how you would get the old bushing off. It looks like the head is crimped or peened over. I don't believe they were meant to be replaced. I can't believe that the new magnet wouldn't come with a new bushing.

And your new magnet isn't magnetic? Isn't that terrific. You will definately have to take it to a speedometer shop to get it calibrated properly.

I would send a PM to 'gaugetech'. I am sure he will have the answer.

I sent him a PM last night, good idea.

This is a bit of an unpleasant situation. The nearest speedo shop I've been able to find is about 2 hours away...that's a bit of a drive after work.

So how did you fix your situation?

Well, I found a couple of Corvette shops a bit closer, and one of them "has a guy" that can take care of my issues. I guess I'll find out for sure in 3 days or so.
