OK so, dad and I recently took my carb appart and tuned it up, and now my car runs better than EVER! my carb kit came with this and I had no idea what it was for (my carb came off without one on it) we then proceded to jump into dads carb, his had one and it hit me where that little spone was supposed to go.
now the question is, is it worth it to pull my carb off, take the base plate off, install this sponge and re-install everything? what is it for?

Its running GREAT, and I had nothing to believe that it was ever leaking (thats dads fuel bowl) we put some soapy water on the 2 plugs and shot air into the main fuel inlet, no bubbles. so if I were to put it in would it just be for pice of mind? or is it a good idea just to install it?

If you notice in the morning you have to crank the engine for a long time to get gas to the carb then you will need to install it or epoxy the plugs or tap the lead plugs very lightly until they tighten up again.
edit-Lars prefers to drill and tap the plugs-probably the most permanent solution.

Empty bowls can also be caused by gas percolating/evaporating. If I am not mistaken, Lars had to repair very few well leaks....something like less than 20%...I just don't remember. Perhaps he's reading this and can answer.

Siphoning back to the tank can also empty bowls but my point was "if" the plugs were leaking he would have to fix them.If you do end up with an empty bowl after sitting all night you just have to determine. what is causing it.One way to eliminate the siphoning back to the tank is to clamp the rubber fuel lines at the pump and if its still emptying its not siphoning.
