Are there any good radiator cleaners out there that really work without having to pull the readiator and have it boiled or replaced?
All I will tell you is do NOT do a method that uses CLR in the radiator for about 30 minutes and then drain. I did it a few years ago and then had to replace the radiator about a year later. Ate up everything.
CLR-Calcium Lime Rust. Its a product that is supposed to remove those deposits.
I tried that stuff about a year ago and couldn't tell it did anything at the time. Coincidentally, my car did boil water out today after idleing for about 15-20 minutes. I may need to take another look down in there :o
This was talked about a month or so back. Someone had mentioned oxalic acid. Can be bought at most marine stores. I think it is used to clean the bottom of fiberglass boats.
We have two tricks in France for this issue.
First one is that we have a washing powder called "lessive Saint Marc" which has the property of react chimically in presence of calcareous or scale. We prepare a dilution with 10% to 15% of powder, pour it into the engine, run it for five minutes until it is hot enough then flush and rinse with clean water. Repeat the process until the water flush clean out of the engine.
Another solution is to use white vinegar. Follow the same procedure as of with the detergent, letting the engine raise the temperature of the dilution to improve the reaction. It is well known as a calcareous cleaner.
