The only time I take the metal key out is to key a new Mustang in a parking lot.

I've had my car for a year and a half and have never tried the metal key. I guess I should.

Great, tried mine in my '08, it opened but REAL hard. Stood up and the key was not attached to the FOB anymore and was still in the keyhole. Can't find the little screw that fell out. Guess I have to make a trip to the dealer. (I'll try my other one tonight.

I use my key all the time to lock the glovebox of my '06 VERT. I leave the top down all the time and lock whatever belongings I have laying around in my glovebox. I have never used the key to open the trunk but I'll try it today.

Thanks for the advise. I tried mine for the first time today and it worked great and did not set off the alarm. I am keeping it in my wallet for emergencies with the spare at home.

A while ago I put some blue masking tape over the key slot to keep the dirt out and to make it easier to find in case I ever need it.

What setting are using
to keep the alarm from
going off? Do you have
your car set to auto lock
doors?

There have been a number of reports by forum members that, when they had a dead battery, they were unable to open the hatch with the key.

When the key lock cylinder turns, it pulls a cable that will manually/mechanically pull a tab that will open the hatch in an emergency so you can then pull the tab that will manually open the driver's door so you can pull the hood release to get to the battery to charge it.

If the key doesn't work, you can jack up the passenger side of the car and put a charger on the starter and ground and then use the Fob to open a door, but that can be difficult in a tight garage or some place where you don't have a jack.

What you are trying to check when you use the key to open the hatch is that the cable is hooked up properly as in the photo below:

If the end of the cable becomes disconnected, as in the photo below, the key may not open the hatch:

Anyway, it's a good thing to check your key every once in a while so that you know that your cable is hooked up properly and the key will operate the latch in an emergency.

Bob

Well that would be me... therefore I will endeavor to use the key and review the protocol.

Ok I got the key thing figured out but what happens when you toss your coat (with your fob in the pocket) and then close the hatch with the doors locked....uhoh

Mine took a little effort at first but came out. I'm kind of glad it doesn't come out real easy.
