I have a 2008 Corvette. How do I determine if it is compliant for CA Emissions. Option Codes indicate FE9 - Federal Emissions.

There should be a sticker on one side of your hood when you open it. That is what the CA DMV had to see in order for me to register mine a few years ago.

 

I have an 06 I bought used in North Carolina. All Corvettes are 50 state legal. If you go on the California DMV web site, they have an image of a certification sticker. If yours has that sticker, it is legal. Check this site. http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/fast_facts/ffvr29.htm

FE9 is not CA emissions. This car could not have been sold new in CA.

If you are planning on registering or selling this car in CA, it must have more than 7500 miles on the odometer. Then you get a smog check, visual inspection, pay the fees, and walk out of the DMV with CA plates!

There are a few exceptions, like military service. Check the CA DMV website.

 

I believe a job move will also allow CA plates but sure you'll have to provide documentation for that fact.

 

FE9 is 50 state emissions.

 

All cars sold new are 50 state legal. Its part of epa emissions standards. You will have to pass a smog test in ca which wont be hard if your car is unaltered or only has exhuast. Intakes have to have whats called a c.a.r.b certification saying they are emissions certified in cali.

I purchased my 08 C6 new in CA and it does NOT have the FE9 Federal Emission Certification, but does have the following emission Option Codes:

NU5 - Emission System California Bin 4
YF5 - 50-State Emissions

I'm guessing the NU5 option is the one required to make the car legal in CA as a new car. After it has 7,500 miles on the odometer, the regulations all change for registration.

 

my sticker was located on the side of the hood about 8 inches up from where it hinged on the passenger side. The DMV people know what they are looking for. It took about 2 minutes to take care of.

 

As noted, all Corvettes are mechanically the same and meet 50 state federal emissions from the factory. However, that is not good enough for a new car registration in California. It must be ordered to meet California emissions and reflect that on the RPO codes. While it is ridiculous and simply bureaucratic red tape, it is what it is.

If your car does not have YF5 you will have a long, up hill battle to register a new car in California. If it is a used car and has more than 7,500 miles on it, it can be registered but will have to pass a smog check.

Emission Ordering Options:

FE9 FEDERAL EMISSIONS. Use for ordering vehicles that will be registered in all states except California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

YF5 CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS. Use for ordering vehicles that will be registered in California.

NE1 CT/MA/ME/NY/PA/RI/VT EMISSIONS. Use for ordering vehicles that will be registered in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island or Vermont.

California Emission Requirements: All new 2008 model year GM vehicles sold for registration in California are required to meet California emission requirements. To meet these requirements, option code YF5 “CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS” should be ordered for 2008 model year vehicles that will be registered in California. Note below under “EPA Policy on the Sale of California Emission Vehicles” that dealers in border states (Arizona, Nevada and Oregon) are permitted, but not required, to order and sell YF5 “CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS” vehicles.

Please be aware that vehicles ordered/produced with emission option FE9 cannot be sold for registration in California unless the vehicle is 50-state certified. To determine if a FE9 vehicle is 50-state certified, in addition to checking Table 1, the dealer MUST check the underhood VEHICLE EMISSION CONTROL INFORMATION label to verify that the conformity statement on the label states that the vehicle or engine “CONFORMS TO … CALIFORNIA REGULATIONS” or “IS CERTIFIED FOR SALE IN CALIFORNIA”. If the conformity statement does not contain either of these two specific phrases, the vehicle cannot be sold for registration in California.


The decal that people are referring to in the above posts looks like the one pictured below. This is a NE1 decal used for cars to be registered in the New England states. Notice that it specifically states California compliance on it as the New England states have adopted California emissions.

FE-9 is NOT California emissions
YF-5 IS California emissions

I have lived in California over 50 years, and am aware of the smog laws here. My 2008 Vette is FE-9,from out of state, and I had to go thru the process to register it here. I bought it used, with almost 10K miles, so I was OK. All new Vettes sold here must be YF-5.

I just bought a FE9 equipped 08 Z06 that was sold new in Texas and has been registered there since. It has well less than 7500 miles even given my drive back. However it does have the wording under the hood that it is "meets federal emissions standards and California FEV etc....." So in the case at least of my 08 which was bought out of state with FE9 on the build sheet the emissions sticker does include California. However due to its age (08 in 13) I suspect I will need a smog test anyhow.
