Default Navy Blue double din install pics

I got started tonight on the first install in the new DD Mods shop! This forum members car will be done in the exterior matching 2001 Navy Blue. The dd bezel, console, travel buddy, door pulls all have been stripped and painted in Navy Blue. DD head unit of choice for this install will be the new Kenwood 6160. This is my first time messing with the new Kenwood units and I must say the new features are reall nice for this unit!

The factory Bose speakers will be kept so we will be using the pac roem-vet1 harness with this install.

ok some pics.

We started by removing the bezel

after the bezel is removed next comes the fun job of cutting out the support brackets for the install

using the roem-vet1 was pretty basic with a couple exceptions. For the most part you just need to follow the directions and match color codes wires.

some exceptions to know
1) the blue wire from the Kenwood harness will be connected to the blue/white wire from the roem-vet1
2) you will need to take the light green wire and ground it to the black ground wires for the bypass option.
3) the orange/white wire from the radio will connect to the yellow or cream colored wire on the bottom right or blue end of the havc control
red wire from the roem-vet1 will be run to the box in the footwell for power.
all speaker wires and others are like i mentioned color coded for easy to figure out connections.

pic of the hvac wire

pic of the wired Kenwood harness to the roem-vet1 harness

pic of the red wire(with an extentions to reach the footwell so its not actually red)

next step was to run the wire and antenna for the gps
we put this in the front windshield corner of drivers side

blue tooth for this unit was run up the to drivers side corner of the windshield

after all done with wiring comes test fit time of the new bezel.
head nit is set in place and tomorrow morning the hvac controls will get set in place and then button the rest up.

Couple snesak pics of the bezel in for test fitting.

Stay tuned for tomorrows end results and final pics if the install

Looks great, upgrading the old stereo.... Is the original stock radio still working, I'm looking for one just like yours (stock). Mine is a 99 with same but cassette not CD and I want to keep that stock appearance... Just wondering... If interested, update this and I'll give you my email...

HI
The radio is not actually mine. This is an install for a customer I am posting. The customer is a forum member so i will make sure to tell him to read this and contact you about the radio.

Looks great. I was eyeballing the new Kenwood unit as well. I really like the volume **** vs. the small volume touch buttons you find on other units. A lot easier to use when driving IMO. Looking forward to the final pics!

Dennis just a heads up.

Was Reading the following text in your thread but the photo shows you connected the lite green wire to the HVAC control instead of the orange/white wire. I'm pretty sure the text is correct but the photo looks like the green wire got connected to the lighting circuit instead of the ground.

"some exceptions to know
1) the blue wire from the Kenwood harness will be connected to the blue/white wire from the roem-vet1
2) you will need to take the light green wire and ground it to the black ground wires for the bypass option.

the light green wire was the correct wire to be grounded

the orange/white was also the dimmer lead from the kenwood as well.

its all good

the light green wire you see goign to the hvac control is just an extra piece we used as a extension to lengthen the orange/white wire is all.

Awesome mod man!!!! Bummer I have a black car so I cant really get a cool color. I was thinking of going with the carbon fiber but then I would have to do the door bezels and all that....but it totally upgrades the look of the C5 interior......I like what you do!!!

Ok, when I saw the lite green wire in the photo something didn't look right. The biege HVAC illumination wire is the one I was also planning to use for my orange/white wire Kenwood install.

How short were the wires that were in the Kenwood's main harness. Hope I don't end up having to extend every wire also.

the kenwood wires are kinda short
but there was plenty of extra in the roem-vet1 to use
