Default Best way to get at the nipple (the NPP in a box kind)

I pulled the pass. side cover off, and looked behind the intake, but dam if I could see ANYTHING back there. I've got the LS3, which has the vacuum nipple I'm supposed to open up and tap, but I can't even see it. Anyone have any suggestions about how they went about it? I can already see I'm going to have to pull off the coil pack. My hands are just average sized, and I can barely get a finger back there, I'm thinking I may have to get my 7 year old involved....

Yeah, I read that, but man I can't even see the vacuum ports on the back of the intake, and can't get my hands back there to feel for them. Coil packs are still on, and I can see that I'll gain about an inch w/ them off, hopefully that will be enough.

Have to have someone with child hands or pull the intake. I gave up on mine and found an old style NPP in the box unit so I didn't have to run the vac line.

Some have reported success in getting to the barb but I just don't see how...

I installed mine yesterday, what a pain!
I removed my coil pack assy., then I couldn't twist the 'T' cap off with my large paw.
So I took an spare 1/4" drive-3/8" Craftsman socket and ground a notch about 1/2 way down into the socket, 3/16" wide (same thickness of the 4 1/2" cutting wheel.
This makes the perfect tool to go over the plastic 'T', I then attached a 1/4" drive wheel to the socket and twisted that plastic "T" cap off.
Thinking I had the hard part done, I checked with a mirror and flash light to see that the hole was visible, it was!
So I next tried to install the vacuum hose after I blew it clear with conpressed air, My fat hand again cramped up, so I removed the valve cover too! I added a small amount of lube to help it slide on.
Finnaly after making my left wrist look like hamburger I was done, this was the hardest part of the job for me.
But the pain is worth it, as my car didn't come with NPP mufflers, and I knew I had to have this option after renting a Hertz Corvette with NPP exhaust last October in Vegas!!

Good luck and get a inspection mirror with an extension handle and plenty of light, and keep reminding yourself it's worth the pain.

I read in the other thread that a 12mm socket works perfectly to snap that cover off. I'm hoping that after getting the coil pack off, and wearing long sleeves and mechanix gloves that I can keep the blood loss to a minimum.

I have big hands and I was able to get mine off using a electrical wire connecter cutting a notch in it and using it as a tool to give you something to twist. You have to take the coil pack off for sure and you will lose some skin and blood but it's worth it

Default nipple off

I found that using a 12 mm socked will do the trick really well. A 1/4" drive ratchet and a short 12 mm socked will fit between the firewall and the motor. Then all you have to do is pull the ratchet toward you and it should snap right off. I have small hands and I beat then up pretty bad until I tried the socket. Once I did it, I wondered why I had made such a big deal out of it. My car is an 08, I am guessing all c6's are alike. Good luck.

You can also try cutting it off with an exacto or box cutting knife....it will take you a while, and you will need to be sure you stay in the same cut or notch....then of course, you still need to get your hand back there to put on the new vacuum hose......

Default Npp Install

I posted the exact question a few days ago. I purchased the NPP mufflers and Mild to Wild kit off Ebay. I had the mufflers installed at a local shop for about $75. Then after bleeding all over the motor I gave up even with the coil packs off. Thanks for all the posts. My muffler baffles are open and sound great. I can only assume that after the install and pushing the remote button they will close. I would leave them open but at about 70 MPH the mufflers seem to "get in the car" with me.

If you haven't already hooked it up by now, you are correct. They are open when you don't have the vacuum hooked up. Once you can get it hooked up, you will be able to close them.

That's the way I did it on my 07 but I had my Son who has thinner arms and hands do it. It still took 2 hours to complete with rest periods. We had to cut through 3/4 of the way before it finally twisted off. I wish I had know about the 12mm socket approach.

I did not remove anything except the FRC on the passenger side. This was following the directions from Sunset Orange Creations who supplied my vacuum kit.

See post #18 in the attached link for a good picture of what your trying to get at.

I've had my new exhaust sitting in the garage for a month because no one had any idea on the vacuum port so thanks for all the info. I now know that I should slam my hand in the door before starting so my attitude will be perfect!!

Has anyone tried removing the intake manifold to expose the fitting? I had the intake on my '05 off a few times and it's a pretty simple task. No way does it take 2 hours to R&R an intake.

I unbolted the plate that all the coil packs mount to, and moved it a couple inches out of the way. That actually gave me enough room to get my hand back there and I got the nipple off with my bare fingers! I lucked out, since I have pretty skinny hands/wrists. I couldn't get at it at all if I just removed the coil back, but once I removed the plate that the coil packs mount to and slid it out of the way a bit I could get at the nipple without tooooo much discomfort.

So now that the vacuum port broke off (I still could not remove the break-off tab holding it in my hand) does anyone have a engine diagram so I can see what I am facing? Thanks

Diagram? Here's a photo of an LS2 intake manifold.

Thanks, that helps. So is the vacuum output a seperate part or should I plug the opening and try another option. I can't believe this has become that complicated.
