I recently purchased a 2008. They gave me one key fob and have ordered me another one. I noticed the memory seat function was not working properly so I pulled out the owner's manual. It says "If a keyless access transmitter that is not labelled 1 or 2 is used, the personalization system will not recognize the transmitter." Also the DIC will not desplay current driver, features will be set to default settings, and options are unavailable.
My transmitter has no number. Do I need to have the dealer order me two new fobs, labeled one and two, or does this one need to be reprogrammed? How can I tell what number this fob is programmed as?
The label is for convenience. Fob #1 will be the first one programmed - even if it has a #2 on it. The fobs are all the same electronically, all the programing is in the car.
Yes, it has to be erased and reprogrammed. Might as well wait until the other new one arrives and do both as the same time, then you can establish at that time which one will be #1 and which one #2. The dealer can do the programming more easily than you can but if you're patient and adventurous you can do it yourself. The programming instructions are here:
Only 2 Fobs will activate the options menu on the DIC. You can program up to 4 Fobs. The Fobs marked 1 & 2 were programmed at the factory. If you lose one of the original Fobs and replace and program it....it will read as Fob #3 and you will not be able to use the options menu for your settings with that particular Fob.
My car was missing the #1 Fob when I took delivery. When I received a replacement one maked as#1 it read as #3 when I programmed it. So the options didn't work....I ended up at the dealership and had them cleared out and put in the normal sequence.
Sounds like a good idea to let the dealer do it. Bad thing is, every time I turn off the car, everything moves to the "easy exit" settings and I have to readjust everything when I get back in.

That means that the fob you're using has the memory option and that option has been set with the DIC. All you need to do is to go into the vehicle personalization options and turn that option off. Then, when you get the seat positioned where you want it, it won't move by itself.
Thanks, JimTN. I went through the options and found out that the memory seat function was disabled. That's why the seats wouldn't move back. So, apparently, there is nothing wrong with the way the fob is programmed. I'm learning.
Another 'surprising' feature of the fob hierachy is that the settings on the radio/head unit are stored as part of the fob memory.
Every preset in every band (AM/FM/XM/CD) can have a different EQ setting stored along with the particular channel.
Once you have memories stored for fobs 1 and 2, you can recall them (if you have a fob #3 or #4 that you're using) by pressing the 1 or 2 button on the door.
In contrast to other blogs that follow, it common for my FOB key to just fall out of the FOB. I tried a little touch of glue (I hope to b e able to break away), but to no avial. It falls out frequently and ends up in diffent pockets and ultimately I am sure I will lose it. Suggestions. 2010 GS still under warrenty.

Some sites sell a fob cover or sleeve. you could also use a small piece of black tape. Dealer would likely replace the fob, if he should do that make sure he reprograms.

Do you have the correct FOB for the year of the car? The emergency key should be inside the FOB. Make sure you get another emergency key with the new FOB as the keys are ordered separately from the FOBs.
The FOB Number is on the thin side of the FOB and barely noticeable.

Yes, make sure you get an integral key. And after you get it cut, make sure it works.
You can also get extra keys made for under $10. Use key blank B-106 (same as a Saturn). I keep one in my wallet.
And congrats on your new C6!

I had never heard of such sleeves. But looking at the site, it looks like they would hold the hatch key in the FOB unless taken off. Great idea and suggestion. Let's see if it works. Thanks bob

Tip: Get different color sleeves -- makes it easy to identify fob #1 vs fob #2.
