Remove wheels, remove axle nut. Remove upper control arm mounts to allow you to swing it out to get axle out. Pop Axle out.
Install c5, torque axle nut to 140 ftlbs with red locktite. Put upper control arm back on, making sure washers in place, and torque to 48ftlbs, reinstall wheel. Very very straight forward.

Why the switch to C5 shafts? Are they stronger than all C6 shafts?

New axle nuts should be used. On top of putting Loctite I used the old nut after the new one as a "lock nut" so to speak. Too many stories of those nuts coming loose.

Whatever is easier for you. Just need enough play to swing the hub out to get the axle out. I've never taken the ball joint off, but you could do it that way if that is easier for you.

C5 axles are stronger than c6 axles. Well atleast 06-08 axles, the later axles seem to be decent. I know several people that have gone mid 9s to mid 8s on c5 axles. Running them on my 1000+ car on 345 drag radials and no issues.

When I installed my C5 axles years ago, I did everything to spec as if I was just swapping a stock c6 axle.

C5 units are tough as nails, I have tons of 10 sec passes and they are fine where I popped several C6 units before switching.

FYI, I ordered mine from rock auto and they came with new nuts even though they don't mention that. Good idea to replace as said above.

If you can change your own oil you can do this in about 1.5 hrs per side taking your time. It's not bad at all. Good luck.

Very easy to do. Just did one myself on my car. I chose to get original C5 axle from the dealer, only because I trust it more than aftermarket. Personal choice there.

You know the part numbers? Are they C5 Z units?

c5z and c5 are the same. Any 1997-2004 rear axle set will work.

Thanks. I have the 05R on the way, so I'll probably slap these in too.

So are you using the Cardone units? If so, how do they hold up?

I don't have the part numbers handy. Just look up (gmpartshouse or similar site) for a 2004 C5 axle and it will give the info.

They pretty much look the same. The CV joint is what breaks and you can't see the differences inside.

This is how I broke 2 C6z passenger axles in a row. As you can see, very little difference to the slightly larger C5z axle.
