Have a friend with a 70 El Camino 454 BB..New flat tappet cam kit..all components matched from the same manufacture..Mild cam about .500 lift break in procedures followed closely, break in lube added.Wiped the cam lobes at about 5000 miles...Guess what oil he was using ..Rotella oil for diesels...This was about two years ago..He changed the cam to another flat tappet and has been using Mobil 1 15-50 since,no issues so far...In my L48 retro roller cam I use Mobil 1 0-40w..Was using the 15-50w but noticed some tapping at start up...The switch to 0-40w eliminated the slight tapping...Good price at Walmart and ez to get..
If your thinking about a cam swap go roller cam...It's worth the cost, the performance gains are awsum...practically eliminate the chances of wiped cam lobes..

I was the president of the Shell Rotella fan club for about 30 years ...........Till I wiped 3 lobes on my pride and joy @ under 5000 miles and trashed a $6000 motor that was built right, broke in right, not abused and never seen redline .

540 RAT, great post.
What was your test procedure? Did it conform to and SAE or ASTM standard?

That thread is seven years old but you can find his blog here:

There is also a sticky at the top of the Tech/Performance page with most of the information you are seeking.
