Is there a way to defeat this i.e. keep it in track mode or manual mode. I hated this on my wife's old Camaro.
I never kept up with this always had manual my 16 was built today and still having regrets over trans choice. I have had auto in 4 Corvettes out of 31.

In EcoMode it will only go to 4cyl mode if you are very light on the throttle, Eco Mode alone will not set it to 4cyl - Sport or Track Modes will not deactivate 4 cylinders
With the A8 in manual mode it will not change to 4 cylinder mode. Beyond that you can plug in the Range AFM module (plugs in to OBDII port) which prevents AFM activation with no other side effects and it does NOT reprogram the ECM. The only caveat is:
1. It has a slight current draw when the vehicle is off so it will drain the battery more quickly. The simple solution is an OBDII extension cable with a power switch so you can leave it plugged in but shut off power when your Z06 is not in use.
2. OnStar automatic reporting gets upset with anything plugged into the OBDII port and usually this will interfere with some of OnStar's monthly health report if that bothers you. The same is true if you plug in some of the insurance company modules that monitor via the OBDII port.
I left my Z06 in manual mode during the initial drive home from the museum last week since I definitely did not want it running in 4 cylinder mode during initial break-in. I will be plugging in my Range module via an extension cable with power switch later this week. If you decide to go with a Range module at the least buy a standard extension cable so any wear/tear occurs to the extension cable socket instead of the vehicle socket. But the switched cable is cheap and well worth having.
Range is not perfect. Will not kill battery on a daily driver. Oh, here's mine in my hand and not in the car. $150.00 and it can be in your hand.
AFM in the Camaro was horrible, this ZO6 is hardly noticeable other than it quiets my exhaust on occasion.
Thanks everyone for the replys looks like I'm in manual mode if I tiree of that than might consider the ranger. I still want mn7 but need to keep peace in house.

My wife's 2015 Z51 around 1500rpm in any mode goes back and forth 4 to 8 cyl. mode. Took it to the dealer they said just drive it in manual mode .There should be a fix for this because the rpm varies from 1300 to 1800 at 70 mph. It's not the trans . so says the dealer. The car only has 7000 miles on it bought it brand new. I guess the AFM is the fix ?
The dreaded AFM is the main reason I went with the M7...and no regrets.
Well so far my 2016 Z06 does not seem to have this problem , but I have less than half the miles on it. I hope GM can somehow fix this with a program upgrade. They both drive great and I can't tell you how much we love driving them. best cars on the planet. I would think that if you wanted 4 cyl. mode you would have to intently put it in that mode.
