Call me cheap but if mines not to bad i'll just blow it out with compressed air from the opposite side of the air flow direction. Works pretty well for as few a miles as I put on it and this idea doesn't sound much worse than putting a dryer sheet in the box.....
Oh, and the black stuff on mine is chunks of my hood insulation that they ate above the alternator and right side coil cover. Thankfully they didn't eat any wiring that I can find. I do need a new hood blanket though. For a replacement I used a fram cf11181 fresh breeze filter from Amazon. I have checked it several times for signs of more mouse house and it is staying clean!
Doesn't take much for them to get a little debris inside so the OPs filter is likely pretty new.
As an aside...Love the OPs copyright on the photos Geezus, if some of us did that we'd have a couple thousand pics to mark.
I have a web site for RV parts I sell and you would be surprise the number of so called honest businesses that use other peoples work to advertise there products. Just a habit I got into after I had an idea stolen for a product by a major RV chassis manufacturer. They have since gone out of business but the product is still being made.
OBTW - Got a new CAF and installed it. Really nice charcoal style filter from WIX for $20 at O'Reilly's Auto Parts

FYI pictures belong to the person who took them and by law it is illegal to use them in any way without the owners permission. So by copying and posting pictures could bring a lawsuit your way!
When I first change mine, it look like someone had shaved a cat, and the filter caught all the hair. So although I get years out of the engine air filter, i still change the cabin charcoal filter yearly instead.
Also, if it has been a hot summer with a lot of A/C use, not a bad ideal to check the A/C drain hose to make sure it not clogged, and do a Lysol treatment to the A/C coils to kill any mold that has started to build up as well.

You mentioned to spray the filter with Lysol on it, just the regular Lysol or one with a fragrant?

My point was that I've posted hundreds of my own pictures and I can't imagine copyrighting them. Ditto the thousands of other pics people have posted that we all see referenced in a multitude of other posts.
