Default 2008 Recall

So I got a letter from GM about possible Fuel Fumes issue and if you have it, they will repair at no cost. Contacted local dealer, verified, took in for appointment and have not see car for two week now. Dealer called today, said parts are not available and are on backorder. Does this sound right?? I would expect parts to be stocked up before sending out notices like this.

Normal on the TSB's.

Most of the time, the dealer will just order the parts in and have you bring the car in when he has the parts (think low beam recall or the roof replacements), but in the case of a fuel leak, really should not be driving the car this way isntead. Hence will bet that it the fuel pump that is cracked, and GM themselves has these on back order right now isntead.

As for wait times, on my 05, it had 5 recalls that needed to be taken care of, and since a replacement roof was once of them (had to get it in and paint it), it was about 6 weeks from the time they ordered the parts in, until it was time to drop the car off so they could do all the recalls/had the needed parts).

I got this letter too on my 2008. Although I thought my fuel smells could be just the headers. Didn't it say something like condensation of fuel seen somewhere or something?

Update: 3 weeks now and according to dealer and GM there are no parts available. Down side is my dealer clearly did not check and disassembled my Vette before realizing they cannot get part. So my car is just sitting on the same lift waiting..

Dealer calling it the 'Fuel Management System" Pump unit is what I was thinking LOL

If it were me I'd buy the part myself and hand it to them and tell them to install it. Rock Auto has several in stock as I type this.

I thought the issue was the tank actually splitting near the top of the tank, not the fuel bucket itself?

Thanks for all input, I found several ACDelco units my self and dealer will not use as "It much come from GM" and this week make week #5. They have provided me with a loaner vehicle the entire duration, otherwise I would not be a very nice customer.

What a load of shlt! If it has the same part number WTF difference does it make where it came from! Especially when they have no idea when GM will have one available.

I wonder if GM is testing a redesigned fuel pump and do not want to release it until testing is complete? Especially, if the current Delco fuel pump is available at other retailers and it's costing GM car rentals for customers and taking up rack spots at the shops. I know through the years fuel pump part numbers have changed. When GM finally releases the new fuel pumps, it will be interesting to see if the part numbers supersede.

In the vast majority of the cases, it is not the fuel tank. It is the fuel pump that mounts from the top of the tank into the tank. On the exterior top side of the pump mounting plate, there is an exterior 90deg plastic fuel line connection elbow fitting that cracks and spews fuel.

So could an 06 have this issue? I have a pretty heavy gas smell in the cabin. I do have cats so I know it's not that. Also, would I be out of luck since I'm just past the 10 year mark?

I have not received a letter about this yet...just the low beams.

Thanks!

I would tend to say they will not cover yours. When I called GM, they were very quick to check age and mileage. You can call GM Customer Care is you have an hour to spare.

I Got my Vette back!! Scared shitless to drive after being disassembled for two months, god only knows what was or was not put back correctly. As soon as I drove out of dealership car started shaking all over the place and went right back to find out they forgot to finish putting lugnuts on, so now I really nervous.

Wise to drive safely and move up to speeds to see if everything is "together." Also, go buy a socket and good torque wrench and check all the lugs on your car --- even tho the dealer supposedly now has done them all. A wheel falling off is no fun. I've been close, many years ago.

After a fuel pump install, you would think the tech would perform a test drive? Lug nuts not secure, wow!
