Without looking it up, I think the case is a 63 or 64' "Pat. Pend." Was dropped in 64 (I think). Most likely a pass car. No help w/ 8.

Is the top boss on the case rounded or rectangular?

Drivers side serial # 4100111.
The 325 case was 64-65 only.
The 584 tail housing was first introduced in 65-mid year, and used up through 1970.
The 4 in front of the 6 digit VIN (100111) denotes the year (1964).
The P0815 is Muncie Aug 15.
Since the VIN indicates the 111th car built, that would seem to be a VERY EARLY 65 production---------------------BUT, the 4 in front of the VIN indicates a 64 model. Thus, that throws me at a loss????

With the 4 in the serial # I was thinking the main case is 1964. But the sideways 8 is different?

By top boss, do you mean the top of the trans. where the top center bolt threads in? I can get a picture of that when I get home.

I see what you mean with the Aug. Date and the low serial # 111. It would make it a 1965. Or can that be Aug. 15 1963 with an early 1964 serial #?

That's what baffles me. If we had the COMPLETE VIN, then we would have a better idea. With only the partial VIN, there is no way to know what kind of car it was from (Vette, some model of Chevy, Pont, Olds, Buick?????).
The VERY FIRST digit (number) of a VIN tells which division it is:
1-Chevy
2-Pont
3-Olds
4-Buick.

I read that the Corvette serial # went on the drivers side and other cars went on the passager side. I'm not sure if that is true.

Yes, where the tail shaft bolts to the case through the bearing retainer. I'm guessing yours is rounded with the pat pending designation which eliminates 65

The tail SHAFT does NOT bolt to anything! BUT, the tail HOUSING does bolt to the main case.

Housing

Yes, that is the boss being referred to. It became square later in 65. After that , all subsequent cases had a square boss at that location.

By the looks of it, your muncie maincase is from 64 but your tailhousing is from a 66-70 Corvette. I have an original Muncie, here is my tailhousing with drivers side speedo. Here is a link with a ton of information on your Muncie. BTWY, what are you putting it into?

65-70. The 584 tail housing came into use sometime during the 65 model year-----------------------------EXCEPT on SOME cars. GTOs for example used the 429 tail housing (driver side speedo fitting) until about 1970.

You might want to check this with other knowledgeable Muncie folks.
I've been rebuilding 4spds (mostly Muncies) for almost 50yrs (well, actually, it's now been 50yrs).

Seems this subject comes up at least once a year. I blame it all on A. Colvin's comment about using the ...429 tailhousing until 02/65, then the ...584 thereafter.

From September 1964 issue of Chevrolet Service News: "....The Chevelle, Chevy II, and the Corvette .... The four speed transmissions have revised extension housings for the right hand speedometer drive location".

I used to own '65 VIN 014xx, and it's original Muncie was date stamped P0916, and it had a passenger side speedo takeoff.
