Can someone tell me exactly how the fob works in the slot even with no battery installed? Is it somehow RFID? or some other magic?

I think that's where the trunk monkey comes into play. I don't know any other way.

Little Gremlins again.

First part is just getting in. Second part is your answer.

So far, nobody's answered your question Mrs. Ow.

And it won't be me, but I will be interested in the real answer.

Electromagnetic Induction

You are inserting the fob into a coil and the coil induces the small amount of power necessary into the fob so it can respond to a query from the car.

You are also placing the fob next to the antenna associated with the Start button to minimize any negative effects from outside RF Interference.

Just to keep things simple the fob acts as a switch when inserted in the glove box hole. It takes current from a contact in the hole onto the outside of the fob, transfers it to the fob brain, just as a good fob battery would do. Then the fob, not something else, sends out a signal that can be recognized by the car just as if the fob battery were working. Pretty simple, not rocket science,

If you need to see a picture to believe......go to Minute 1.27 of this video. The first video I posted mentions the contact point on the outside of the FOB.

So, how does that theory work with the 05-07 fob? There is no direct metal link between the outside and the inside of the fob. There is a rubber barrier over the buttons and the metal C6 symbol stuck to the outside of the fob has plastic behind it.
Oh, and BTW, in that second video at 1:39, those contacts the guy is pointing to is the positive (or negative, not sure which) contact point on the battery. That metal piece just pops out of the PLASTIC part of the fob. There are no external contacts points.

There is no metal contact to the inside of the case of the later C6 fob, either. It sounds like the maker of that video made an incorrect assumption, based on the fact that there is metal on both sides of the fob case.

As you can see on the right, there is no contact with the emblem which is above the battery, and on the left, the only contact is with the buttons, not the metal bars between them.

I'm a learning machine, today!

Electromagnetic induction = F.M.

JK, I think I really do understand how it works.

Yes, I've wondered that too.

Although this had nothing to do with the toothbrush thing, a few years ago I looked up if electricity could be transferred over-the-air wirelessly. Actually it cannot, except in a limited way under laboratory conditions, and wouldn't be practical to actually use anywhere.

So . . .
