I blew up a 2005 GTO (so many mods...just dumb) then traded my intake/tuned/pulley'd 2004 Grand Prix GTP to get my late build 08 c6 with MZ6. That damn GP GTP was a hell of a car and hauled my kids too. The goat was a blast but a problem child but sounded like armageddon. I probably should have stalled it but it was quite streetable despite the cam.
I don't get the 4x4 craze in the past 20-30 years.
I have one mostly to get out of my driveway in the winter (got friggin tired of plowing it, too old) and to navigate the dirt road I live on, and the hills around here can be dicey in the winter.
Aside from someone like me, or a farmer, how many people really need one? They cost considerably more than a 2WD, they get a lot less MPG, and I wouldn't mind saving the money -- and when I was young, I did. But I don't need the hassle of all the slipping and sliding anymore so I pay the piper.
When my wife and I bought a Bronco XLT in '83 everyone thought we had lost our minds. One neighbor actually asked "Are you going to use it as a big station wagon?" Actually, I was an avid skier in those days and I absolutely hated chaining up. Highways 50 and 80 to the Sierra ski resorts are frequently "chains required" and all I had to do was turn that thingy on the Warn hubs. The Bronco served for 17 years with a bunch of ski trips and a lot of big station wagon duty. I remember it got 13 mpg (strangely both up the Sierras and down the Sierras) when it was new and was down to 7 mpg when I sold it. I'd love to have that old truck back again.
Lots of days off. I worked a bunch of overtime to buy the car. On the other hand, I like my job so it wasn't torture. Also I don't have kids at home anymore so I wasn't taking any time away from them.
