step#1 68 has 7" width rims.
69 = 8" width rims, no modifications required.
you can fit some pretty big tires on 8" wheels.
these are rear 9.5" width rims, 10.5" wide tires. no modifications.
rear emergency bracket not moved, but very close.

On the rear, these are your clearances with stock 8" wheels on a 68 with 235 60 15 tires which is about 9.5 inches at the widest point. If you go up to 17 " wheels the rim width isnt near the same obstacles

The max rim is 8 inches without changes to the fenders and e cable bracket and cable. The tires will clear the bracket but not the cable unless you anchor as 69VETTE did or moving it and the bracket. 9.5" side wall width fits with about 1/2 in of clearance on the e cable. the 17 inch Im running is 9.7"with no rub on the cable. Go to tire rack and chose the tire you want , then go to the spec tab and they give you section width and tread width
