Default Passing CA emission

Hi. I am considering buying and bringing in an used Z06 from out of state and registering in CA. I've done that for another car but has anyone with C7Z done this before? Of course, the car is stock.

I am being extra careful since I'll be so screwed if I paid for the whole car, ship it, and can't register here. I'm 99.99% sure it will but I just want to feel assured with someone's experience before spending lots of money.

Thanks for your input!

Interesting enough, I took Museum delivery of my 2016 Z06 then had it shipped to CA.

CA DMV would not recognize it as a new vehicle and just register it even though it only had 10 miles on it. I had to have it inspected by the DMV as if it was an out of state vehicle and get a smog test. Not a big deal just annoying.

That is certainly annoying. Thanks for the information.

More I think about it, more reasons it should pass without any issue.

So I am doing more research. The car I'm trying to get has less than 7,500miles. In that case, it needs to be CA certified. If not, it doesn't let me register in CA. That's kinda weird. All cars are built the same.

My car came from Georgia, had the DMV inspection after I got my Smog Cert. pretty easy actually. they want like 7 cold starts and a few other things and lastly a 20 minute freeway drive just prior to the smog check. Go to a smog station and the tech will tell you what to do. Something like this. If I remember correctly all cars are 50 state legal.

I am asking the current owner to see if the car is CA certified. The car has less than 7,500miles and if it's not CA certified, it looks like I can't register in CA even if it passes smog. I am so confused.

Interesting question, I am in the process of buying a car out of state new, the dealership claims to have a sister dealership in CA that can run the plate for me. Supposed to be 50 state certified.

A used car is different from a new car in CA (as stated above). You can buy a USED car out of state and bring it to CA. I have purchased several used cars from out of state, then smog them and get them registered. You'll have to keep the smog checks every other year.

If you are looking at the one with 7,000 miles used, you just have to bring the Bill of Sale, Smog, Pay Sales Tax ( depending how tax is handle at the dealer or private party) and then do the DMV Registration.

Just curious if you mean its a courtesy delivery and the CA dealer does the paperwork?

They are the same for all 50 states. Years ago there were CA and federal cars. Now all the same.

I totally agree with you but why did GM come up with 3 different codes for an emission specs to choose from? This is what's throwing me off.

It's hard to believe the east coast dealer says "oh I can't sell you this car since you can't register in CA"

Got mine from Arizona passed no problem. Just make sure you know that you have to pay CA sales tax. I did go through a dealer they had their own smog station.

Yeah, tax is pretty standard and I'm sure the car will pass smog. It will suck if I buy the car, pay to transport, and find out that I can't register since it only has 5,000miles and it's not CA certified.

I brought in a used (under 700 miles) 2016 Z06 to California last year. No problem getting it registered. DMV (or AAA) will have to do a physical inspection. Along with the 50 state certification they are also looking for a California certification on the emissions sticker as well. On mine it was the code - LEV160.
I believe all C7's have both certifications - but worth checking.
Here are links to a couple of reference documents that might help - http://www.gmfleet.com/content/dam/g...s-bulletin.pdf and http://www.gmfleet.com/content/dam/g...tification.pdf
Enjoy your new ride.

Thanks for the info!
I've already asked the current owner to send me the pic and it has CA class number so it seems to be okay.

Ordered my Z06 from the factory with California Emissions and Courtesy delivery. No issues at all in getting it registered. Didn't need a smog.

OP - Looks good, since the car has the tag and if used, you should be able to register it. This is what I pulled off the CA DMV site. Hope you get it and enjoy your new ride !!

That is the correct sticker. With 7000 miles it will have gone through those cycles that Jaden showed so just get it smogged and go to an AAA office with a check and probably the out of state title or bank paperwork. Show the AAA person the CA smog sticker that's on the right underside of the hood. The whole process last August took me about 20 minutes to walk out with the green 2017 and August stickers.

Enjoy your Z06!
