Well probably because you only care about your car sitting in a parking lot. For people that actually track their cars, the new aero is perfect.
actually no. i like a well balanced car. one that is aesthetically pleasing and can tackle road duty.
to each their own.. hopefully what Bill suggests is accurate. i'd hate to see these running around with the 2 ft tall wing whenever i see one on the street.
the percentage of Z06 or ZR1's that hit the track on any regular basis can't be more than 2 or 3%. the Vipers (owner's I know) take their cars to roll race events, don't do HPDE ever and the wings are bigger than Wilbur and Orville's "Flyer"..
Bill, i hope to one day after retirement to be able to pull off what you are doing. the only thing stopping me is money.. i love to whip around in this (or any car). but i'll take what i can, without complaining.

The wing is needed for the best performance. It's fully functional and looks really good to me personally (it's better than 85% of aftermarket wings out there).
Most people buying the ZR1 aren't worried about what it looks like driving down the street. They care how it performs at the track.
Also the whole 2-3% argument can apply to any car if you really think about it. Granted I see tons of M3s, Porsches, and Miatas at the track. The group of people who track their cars is a small handful (in the grand scheme of things), but it's enough to where manufacturers can offer extremely high performance track cars with a warranty that are still street legal (like the GT3 RS, ACR, the new ZR1, etc.).
Also tell your Viper buddies to hit the road course. They'll have way more fun there than they will driving straight for half a mile (and they'll be using the aero).
Long Live the King! I love the big functional wing and look forward to putting it to good use at Mid Ohio, Road America, NCM Motorsports Park, long live the King...
A lot of guys talking about "rice" really are just sad that they will no longer be "at the top of the C7 food chain". Unless you consider the C7R race car 'rice' LMFAO.....
And with the 3 ZR1's that have been sent to the ring to break the 7 minute barrier... ohhhhhh my.... Watch the reveal at the Detroit auto show in Jan of 2018....
Think of it this way, the center section of the Stage 3 Spoiler on the current Z06 is movable/removable and the owner's manual says it should be lowered when the car is driven on the street and tells the owner to only use the Stage 3 front splitter end caps on the track and to use the Stage 2 end caps on the street. I suspect the large wing will be something delivered with the car and not recommended for street driving. One really big reason for that is because it will reduce fuel economy quite a bit and they will want to put higher numbers on the window sticker than they would get with the spoiler installed.
The other thing to think about is they are trying to build a dominant track car and big wing spoilers are the way to get the car around the track. Big wing spoilers aren't pretty on any car. Good looking spoilers are usually ineffective from a performance stand point so what do you want something that looks good or something that goes around a corner a lot faster? I gave up being a waxer 27 years ago so I vote for performance.
Bill
I always appreciate your input, Bill.
The above makes great sense to me.
The "wing" will be part of an optional Track package. GM knows that many of these will end up being street cars that will never see the track. GM is not going to lose sales because people don't want the big wing on the back. So I'm sure there will be a street spoiler version.
can't wait to see the specs on this baby. i hope they are able to lighten it up some. I'm still not driving to my current cars capability so this car may be a waste for me. i love the fact that gm is looking to push the envelope though. I'm happy i have these great choices to rip it up on the track all day and then drive home.
Kind of like what Bill said earlier...maybe there is a way to design a quick release mounting system for the wing? Use the big spoiler wing at the track and take it off for the street. Agree that performance is the priority...
The ZL1 1LE Camaro has a similar/same wing...
To me the front of the car looks like it got what it needed in terms of breathing space to prevent overheating.
