Default ZR1 exhaust

What makes the factory C6 ZR1 exhaust muffler better then the Z06 and base NPP exhaust muffler. And how can you tell the difference between the three without having to open them up?

ZR1 mufflers and 2011+ Z06 mufflers have the loud section (inside the muffler) as a straight pipe. The older Z06 mufflers have a perforated pipe on the loud section. The ZR1/ 2011+ Z06 mufflers have the quiet side perforated so it’s quieter than the old muffler (in the quiet mode). You can easily identify the ZR1 muffler by the perforated tips.

So the ZR1 and Z06 2011+ do not need a muffler mod?
What about the NPP on the base model 2008+ what makes them different?

The base model NPP is 2.5" where the Z06/ZR1 NPP is 3" but necks down to 2.5" at the muffler.

I thought the zr1 and z06 mufflers where the same for all years? I even thought the muffler/exhaust setup changed in 2011 for the zr1 so that it no longer necked down to 2.5” at the muffler (as it did for 09 an 10).

Am I just confused?

Exactly, the muffler mod is essentially done from the factory.

09-13 ZR1 had the exact same muffler as shown above. In 2011 the Z06 adopted the ZR1 muffler as well as the ZR1 X pipe. In 2012 the ZR1 and the Z06 got an extra two cats on the X-pipe, so four cats total. Hope this clears it up. Also all the mufflers neck down no matter what year.

Default Noob question - key fob locked in car? 2013 z06.

I know it's probably explained in some obtuse GM manner in the manual, but in English, is it possible to lock my fob in the car, or will it not lock, or will the horn beep at me or what?

I have not had time yet to go thru the preferences etc.

What is you favored setup?

This is the internal of a ZR1 muffler, the bulkhead in the muffler is broken, picture credit v8sten.

You can see the pass through tube is solid and one bypass tube is perforated to quiet the muffler with the butterflies closed.

Here you can see the tubing going through the Z06 and ZR1 mufflers is the same size. Picture credit v8sten.

This is my muffler mod, extra perforated bypass tube for a quiet ride and then straight through when the switch is flipped. I don't know what if anything the perforated tips on the ZR1 mufflers do.

Is there any performance difference between the Z06/ZR1 "X" pipe vs "H" pipe? Or is it basically, just sound difference?

This is the H pipe split down the middle....

This is the X pipe I installed on my Z06

Performance increase? I can't say, but with my muffler mod I like the sound that is for sure.

from TRDNiteLife's post/link ...."sharper, more authoritative tone & significantly more banging & popping upon deceleration at high rpm’s."

I just installed ZR1 mufflers and Corsa X-pipe on my '09 Z06 and that pretty much sums it up.

the 2011 Z06 with single cats produce about 515 SAE HP....the motors were rated at 400 RPM lower than other years just to keep the HP at 505!

The part numbers are different. They are pretty close though. As of right now 11+ Z06 mufflers are the only mufflers I have not cut into. I will however cut into a set in a few months to do the 3" mod to them. At that time I will see the exact difference, if any in between the ZR1 and 11+ Z06 mufflers. Right now the only difference I can see is the quiet holes in the ZR1 mufflers are bigger than the 11+ Z06 mufflers. Those are the holes on the loud pipe, in front of the valve.

I personally have ZR1 mufflers on my GS and broke them, temporarily I have put on the 11+ Z06 mufflers (cause that car is currently down for upgrades) and the sound difference is not noticeable. There has to be a difference inside though, I have fixed dozens of ZR1 mufflers and no 11+ Z06 mufflers have come in for repairs. I originally thought it was a boost issue, ZR1s building boost before the valves open, but my current ZR1 muflers broke on my stock GS, only headers and the mufflers.

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, but what is the advantage of the 3" mod? sound or power or both?

There seems to be a very slight power advantage. It's covered in the 3" muffler mod thread.
