Default Brake Pads?

A little background first, 97, 44K, original pads as far as I know. They are very dirty pads leaving a lot of brake dust on the wheels in a short amount of time but still have a lot of life in them. I want to change them just because they are so dirty, Next I am taking the car to LSFest West in Las Vegas in May. Autocross, 3S, some track time so I figure now is a good time to change the pads. Any suggestion?. Car is mostly street driven but I'm liking autocross, Looking to stay with the stock rotors for now unless there is a good deal on Pads and Rotors that will fill my needs.

Thanks

Dirty pads are an indicator of very efficient brake pads. Soft pads create dust but have a much higher coefficient of friction. They are cooler, create no color distortion, fade or warp for the rotor. Everything is a trade off.. I would never trade cleaner pads ( harder,) l for pads that do a better job at stopping. We did a lot testing on pad compounds in the original C5 design. Some times that extra ten feet of stopping power will save you from becoming trapped under the back end of a jack knifed tractor trailer in front of you. I use the original design because I know the original testing AC Delco Semi Metallic Carbon Ferrous. My car has 100K miles on it, and I would never compromise cleaner for less stopping power. My rotors and wheels have never been seen on the road with brake dust on them. Ive never spent more than five minutes to dust off my four wheels.

80,000 miles on these rotors in this photo, rotors and wheels are 17 years old.

I just checked the EXIF tag information and found that I bought these rotors in 2001. They are 17 years old, the car has 100K miles Now. and they still look good Actually better than when they were new. The soft polishing of the OEM pads are the reason.

If the goal is weekend track days but you don't want to change anything else and still drive as normal just get some Hawk street pads and change your brake fluid. Hawk streets are ~$75, and if you have never changed your brake fluid before or have record of it you need to at this point. After +22 years brake fluid is going to have broken down significantly due to heat cycling and periodically drawing in moisture & air.

ET, these brake pad covers are going on your car when I get it. Probably only mod I'll do except for custom Veteran license plates, EVILT

On my '00 C5, I used Hawk HPS pads on the car and they did not give off a lot of brake dust that I could tell.

Take a look at the Carbotech 1521 pad they are fine to Auto X with and work at the drag strip I would not recommend using them on a road course.

The Carbotech Bobcat 1521™ is our high performance street compound that is our most successful compound. The Bobcat compound is known for its awesome release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. Like our AX™ & XP™ line of compounds, Bobcat 1521™ is a Ceramic based friction material offering minimal rotor damage and non-corrosive dust. Bobcat 1521™ offers outstanding performance, even when cold, low dusting and low noise with an excellent initial bite. This compound’s virtually perfect linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Bobcat 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 900°F. Bobcat 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle, police cruiser. The Bobcat 1521™ compound has been found to last two-three times longer than OE pads you can purchase at a dealership or national retailer. That’s one of the beauties of Carbotech Ceramic brake compounds. Bobcat 1521™ is NOT recommended for any track use.
