I am wanting to build a system for me and my sons trucks. What are good brands now to use. When I was in school and was into the systems it was MA audio JL kicker. Rockford eclipse
any good ones now to suggest and go with
You'll never go wrong with JL. W3's of you only want a little bump. W6 for good bump and W7 for killer bump. Sundown ans Skar also both great. They use to be partners so the subs are almost exactly the same.
HUGE success with the 13TW5V2. It's a shallow sub too, so it will work well in trucks. BTW two of them on a 1000/1 is more than anyone really needs. Ask me how I know. I currently have 2 x 10TW1's in my truck, and they sound great. Nothing like 2 TW5's though. JL is where it's at right now.
Rockford, Kicker, and JL are still around but not as good as they were. Reliability is just not the same. Anything from Kicker can be bought on Ebay refurbished with a warranty to save a few bucks. Kicker amps are solid and under rated. Can't go wrong with Alpine Type R subs either. Your son and his friends will prefer the Sundowns over the JL any day.

Anyone who recommends Kicker over JL should not be taken seriously. The gear you're recommending is like the Toyota Camry of the audio world.
JL would be a Lexus. A little better than Kicker, Rockford, and Type Rs but nobody but old people buy them. There are much better subs for less, like Sundowns.
Ok ok calm down fellas. I think for him we all know kids want to rattle the block or windows so 3 sundowns will do. For me I am thinking of going with a bazooka tube lol. Keep it old school but decent

I remember when the Bazooka tubes first came out and how impressive I thought they sounded, you don't see them around much anymore, but they were one thing I considered for a sub for my convertible, but I ended up deciding to design and build my own. I originally built it to house two Kicker Compr 8" round subs, and it sounded pretty good, then I decided to see if I could build another one, and get it to fit the Kicker Solobaric 8" square subs, which I was able to complete the last few days, and I have to say the square subs were quite impressive, they put out deeper bass, and could handle more power, so they're louder that the original round subs I initially used, So if you're considering building your own, I suggest giving them a try, I know I like them.
I remember selling and installing them when they first came out. best 6.5 or 8" tube I've ever heard. You just have to aim it properly to get the best sound out of it. Usually aimed to the rear or rear corner will get you the best sound. They did not sound as good when the 10" or the NOS bottles started to come out. The sub they used wasn't as good as the originals. IMHO...
To call Sundown "better" than JL just make you sound like a Sundown fanboy. LOL.
They all have their place. I would run sundown stuff if I was building an SPL build.
I have actually never owned Sundowns but I have heard a lot of them. I was a Rockford / JL guy. I still have 2 Punch HX2 12s. But my JL 10s blew long ago. I replaced one and decided to go back to Rockford. JLs just aren't reliable for what they cost. But don't sleep on the Alpine Type R. They sound just like JL. Clean SQ and hit hard.

Dang man, how old were your JL's? I've owned a dozen JL subs, never had one bat an eye even when overdriving them at ohm loads they're not rated for. YMV obviously.
Type R's have always sounded horribly dull to me. I ran a complete Type R setup in my Cobra (subs, components, and 6x9's) and never was happy. But see that's the cool thing about audio...it's subjective to the listener.
10W3V3 JL Stealthbox in my C6 and it sounds great. hard hitting for a 10”, clean and can keep up with fast tempo bass lines and kicks, very musical as they say

They were brand new. I bought them for my 1995 Mustang GT. This was years ago. They lasted maybe 18 months. I was very disappointed.
I’m using a single Sundown SA12 in my C6 and a single SA12 in my Honda Accord. They sound really nice and hit really hard. I’ve had 10w7’s before and unfortunately the Sundowns don’t even hold a candle to the W7’s. After reading as much of PB82 Ronin’s build as my short attention span would allow I am seriously considering trying out some of those shallow mount JL’s. I’m on my 3rd box in the Vette and since I have the same sub with similar power in my other car I know that I don’t have it exactly right yet.
Nah, it was a custom box ran at 2 ohms. My amp was one ohm stable. They sounded better than my 12s but JL is not reliable. They still sell recone kits. How many sub makers do that?
