Default crooked HUD (head up display)

Finally took delivery of my C8 today. Noticed that the projection of the HUD (heads up display) was not level with the horizon. It had a slight rotation to it... I know like the c7 it has a toggle on the dash to move the projection up or down however, obviously this wouldn't solve my issue. Luckily I spent some time going through the menus and found an option to change the rotation as well! Problem solved! I figured I would share this with people as I have watched almost every c8 youtube video over the course of a year and knew nothing about this. I hope this helps someone else out.

2018 and 2019 C7 you could also fix this problem. Many people complained about it, so I guess GM added that feature in.

Perhaps with a particular car it could be an issue. BUT with my 2 C7's, a Red 2014 Z51 and White 2017 Grand Sport it was just a perception! I put the color in because from my observation color made a difference!

I'll explain. 1st saw the issue with my 2014 and as a forum member suggested, I put a level on the upper dash pad and 'convinced myself' it was perfectly level with the earth surface! Then looked at the HUD and sure enough it was level with the upper dash pad. Issue resolved. What I was looking at and saying it did not 'appear level' was the HUD relationship to the curving hood.

When I got my 2017 Grand Sport I was again 'sure' it wasn't level. Same procedure same result! Yep level with the earth! Now in fairness 'perception is reality.' That is why the Geeks who used many columns to hold up the roofs of large buildings (that was before the Romans showed how to use an arch to span larger distance) they learned NOT to make them perfectly straight! Yep perfectly straight columns, when placed close to each other may NOT appear straight or parallel. They tapered columns with a slight bulge in the center!

Now that is different that my wife had me put a picture on a wall! She insists I use a level, which I do to appease her! But then I stand back and often doesn't look straight. Answer is it NOT with the upper wall molding, which in wide in most rooms. Yep the house is NOT perfect! The key is to be sure it 'looks level' on that wall! When adjusted, everyone is happy!

See page 112 of the Owners Manual:

Head-Up Display (HUD) Rotation Option
This feature allows for adjusting the
angle of the HUD image.
Use the right steering wheel
controls to open and scroll through
different items and displays.
The vehicle must be in P (Park).
While in the options menu, press ▲
or ▼ to scroll to the HUD rotation
page. Press the thumbwheel while
Head-Up Display Rotation is
highlighted to enter Adjust Mode.
Press ▲ or ▼ to adjust the angle of
the HUD display. Press SEL to save
the setting. To cancel the setting,
press ◄.

Great job. This was torturing me for weeks.
1. The right side of the steering wheel has that pinwheel you can spin up or down in the center of the 4 arrows.
2. Press down or push in the pinwheel and you will come to a menu on the right side of your digital dash.
3. Use the pinwheel to scroll down to HUD rotation.
4. Press down on the pinwheel again to select the HUD rotation.
5. Use the pinwheel rotating up or down to rotate left or right.
6. When you like the position push down on the pinwheel to save your position.

Remember under your dash to your left is the HUD controls to move it up or down only.
There is also a toggle to adjust the intensity of the image of the HUD as well.

Great Job to Jsanders7120 for pointing this out.

See my post #3. Perhaps there was a problem, perhaps it is only Perception!

But perception is reality except if you use a level on a know flat surface(flat to the World) you may be making the HUD display non level! Been an issue with the C7 until GM added the “adjustment.” But in many cases it's just for a change in “Perception!”

Heck the Greeks knew perception was reality so never made building columns with straight parallel sides!

Although many of us have 2 heads on our body, about 1/2 of us on the planet as a matter of fact, the correct term is head up display (singular)...

In using the C7 HUD, I never found a position that was directly in my line of sight; it was always pointing downwards some. I prefer to have the HUD directly ahead in my line of sight and not have to look towards the nose of the car.
Does the C8 have greater vertical rotational range than the C7?

This is a good example of why downloading the pdf version of the Owners Manual Makes it so useful. Searching to quickly find these things is a breeze.

Being able to adjust the rotation of the HUD is a nice feature to have. The HUD in my '14 is level, but it would be a useful thing to have should the display tilt slightly.

Thx. 2021 Z51 2LT

Have the same problem. Wasn't crooked to start. Got in the car this weekend and noticed the display was a tad off (not level with horizon). Will try this before heading into dealership.

Thanks

For year 2020 owners, there was so much hurry up and wait time, that the prudent thing to do was download a copy of the OM from the stickies and read it cover to cover before your C8 arrives. You will not remember everything, but when something like this "appears", you will remember that you once read something about it and makes it easy to resolve. It was an enjoyable read and provided excitement to the anticipation while waiting.

Re Singular vs Plural.
First - All have only 1 head, but most hardly use 1/2 of it most of the time, more like 10%
Second - The plural misnomer may be a result of Possessive becoming plural by sloppy/lazy. MY head's up display loosing the apostrophe and becoming plural. Just a possibility. Start a research paper.
