Default Need a new cam for my motor (355 sbc 12:1)

I was thinking maybe this cam. I have 1.6 rockers and It is going to be a solid roller.

Voodoo Mechanical Roller Camshaft
Lift: .555''/.566'' ( roughly .590/.600 )
Adv. Duration: 261°/267°
Duration @ .050'': 231°/237°
RPM Range: 2500-6500

This brings up another question. Is it easy to convert hydraulic rollers to a solid roller?

Ick, go hydraulic roller. Solid requires too much attention.

You can run 12:1 CR on the street but you need a cam in the 260-270degs @ .050" to run on pump gas. It will be a little soggy on the bottom end but should really start to scream at 7500 RPM I would pick a cam first then match the compression ratio to the cam unless the shortblock is already built

A 12.1 355 is going to be a screamer,it'll need to spin to around 7500 to make peak power,I would suggest Motorhead and pick a cam 1st then compersion.

Good Luck

Not really! If you run stud girdles or shaft rocker arms, little attention is needed.. I checked my lash after 100 drag strip passes and it was close to perfect!

I like my cam. Don't have the part number handy but it is a Comp Cams solid roller cam with .630 lift (.672 with1.6 rockers) and 264/270 degrees .050 duration and 300/308 degrees advertised duration and 106 degres lobe separation! Great Cam!!

Reminds me, good point. If the engine is only intended for off-road use anyways go for it. If it's going to be used on the street, though, I'd go hydraulic just so there's less maintenance.

I actually go to thinking I want to keep the same cam .550 lift with 1.6 rockers so I don't have to change my springs. Maybe I should just put solid lifters and a cam with more duration so I can go to 7000 rpm. Right now im running a cam with 236* duration @ .50 lift.

12:1 would require some pretty domed pistons or extremely tiny chambers...

It will take more than that to get at 12.4. That would put a typical engine in the 11-1 ratio. The block would have to zero decked and a thin head gasket (.018") to get up that high.

58cc(maybe less) with decked block and skinny gaskets. Some where close to 12:1. I doesn't run on 93.

What do you mean (maybe less)? If you're going to be pushing 12/1 compression you better "know" what size they are.

Putting around the backyard isn't too bad but, WOT and 7000 RPM at the top of first gear is NOT the place to find shortcomings in your parts selection.

You are probably closer to 11.1 --> 11.5

A good hydraulic roller or mechanical cam.

It never hurts to call crane or comp cams and ask them. It is free.
