Default Boyo VTL402C Rear View Camera Install

I started a complete audio replacement this past week. While I wait for my parts from Dennis at DD Mods and Rick at Raamaudio I decided to put in the Boyo VTL402C rear view camera I just got. It is made to go on top of the license plate frame however I didn't like how it blocked the top portion of my plate. While determining whether I was going to keep it or not I noticed that the attachment holes in the camera frame lined up perfectly with existing screws holding in license plate lights. I decided to mount the camera with existing screws since the camera is able to rotate on it's frame.

I removed both the right rear taillights for access.

I drilled a small hole just large enough to get wires into rear area of the car.

I caulked and sealed the wires with Dynamat.

I then removed 4 screws at rear diffuser. I was able to reach in and rotate the reverse light socket out and bring the wires to inside the rear wheel well where I could work on them easily. I also dropped down from above the hot and ground from rear view camera. I snipped the two wires leaving room on both to attach butt crimp terminals. Green wire is hot and black wire is ground.

I crimped in my camera power lead to green and my camera ground to black.

I then crimped the existing car wires back together.

I then ran the wire from camera through the car to the new HU. Since I have the entire car taken apart for sound proofing this was an easy task.

I installed my Boyo camera in the same location, the only thing I did different was I picked up the feed for the reverse light trigger at the fuse box wiring harness at the passenger side seat.

Can you explain this a bit further? Is this a green wire coming from reverse light fuse?

I just finished a complete upgrade and my new HU needs to now tie into the reverse light to trigger the screen. Since I have already reinstalled a good portion of my carpeting, I was stressing over having to run a wire all the way to the back again.

Actually this was a recommendation to me from MarkCz who may be the best one to advise here, but in the footwell on the pass side where the fusebox is located, there's a wiring harness, if I remember correctly it is a green wire that triggers hot and energizes the reverse light when you put your car in reverse, this is where I picked up the feed to the camera, I used a tap connector so I didn't have to cut the wire, and checked with a test light to make sure I had the right wire, also mine is a 6 speed manual shift, so I don't know if the wire is different if you have an automatic.

I did the same thing that you did. I pulled the power and ground from the reverse light wiring in the back of the car. However, Mark helped me as well. lol.... He's da man!

This works like this but the camera will only come on when the car is in reverse. We will normally tie power and ground into the radio harness with the Black(ground) red(accsy) power so the camera can turn on at all times.

As noted the reverse wire from the radio will need to be connected to the green wire on reverse lights on in passenger footwell

That's why you're the pro. It would have been interesting to have the screen on while I was on the track two weeks ago to see who was seeking up behind me. Next time I'm in there, I'll change it.

Dennis, remind me, what is the button that needs to be pushed on the Kenwood 890HD to get the camera on while driving forward?

Getting ready to do a Boyo install along with a Pioneer Appradio 3..

Could you be kind enough to elaborate on the above?

We can install the rear camera so it engages automatically in reverse AND on command as well?

Thanks!

The camera should have an RCA video plug and 2 wires attached to it.

The RCA plug is for video feed to HU.

Red wire is +12v to turn on the camera, black wire is ground.

If you connect the red camera wire to the green reverse light wire the camera will only be powered on when car is in reverse. If you connect camera red wire to red wire in radio harness (or any other switched +12v power in the car) then you can push the button on your radio that will manually switch to the rear camera input, the you can watch the road behind you as you drive.

However you power the camera, you still need to connect the HU 'reverse trigger' wire to the green reverse light wire (either in the footwell or at the rear bulb) so the HU will automatically switch over to the reverse camera when you're in reverse.

Many thanks Markcz as it helps to have as many pieces of the "puzzle" before starting installation.
