Default ✅SOLUTION Everything you wanted to know about your FOB's and RKE

I had the C6 and I developed some step action tables to help people that experienced fob issues. I am trying to do that same service for the C7 owners.

I have the 2014 Owner's manual PDF and I've referred to that document plus I've carried over some of the logic from the C6 process to develop 2 separate tables.

I would appreciate help from you on this in the form of feedback on any errors that may appear in the tables. I will place the tables in here using a PDF format. I have the tables in a MS Word.DOCX format and I can edit and update them quite easily.

I would really like to get these tables accurate to help current and future C7 owners.

I thank you in advance for your feedback,

Elmer

Added by moderator zjoe6. This is a FOB part number table that Elmer posted in another thread. I thought it would be helpful in the opening post.

In Steps 5 and 14, do you exit the programming mode before you press Unlock on the RKE or after?

When you remove the RKE from the slot, press unlock.

Just to make sure I have this right, you removed the RKE, press Unlock and then press and hold the Start button and exit programming.

I haven't read all of that, but this may be of interest to you. Recently, I bought a pair of fobs....they were both used. Each time I tried the programming against a known good fob (fob 2 from my car), the dash would signal waiting for fob 3, at which time I would insert a used fob and hit the start button as directed. Here is where it gets weird. I thought I better check that my good fob allows me to start the car. I was wrong. Car was totally dead. So, I decided to recharge the car battery because it did show less than optimum voltage. Once I did that car still wouldn't start. I re-read the instructions and started fooling around with the process, then bingo, when I held the start button for more than 12 seconds the car would start. The issue is, when a fob does not program, there are no instructions that tell you about the 12 second hold step. They do tell you to do this when the fob responds correctly when inserted in the column....but there is nothing for when it is not accepted. Also, each time I tried the bad fob I had to go all the way back to the trunk operations of turning the key 5 times, and reinserting the fob. I even put in new batteries in the used fobs and that did not resolve the problem. I still don't believe that both fobs could be bad...I wish there was a way to verify them. Again, this is just info for you that perhaps you may use/need.

Yup, that's what the instructions say.

Unlock completes the programming of the RKE

The 12 second press of the start button exits the Programming mode.

Ok, what can I say? Did you look at the programming PDF? It explains long, short and RKE slot testing.

What were you doing? Adding a 3rd? Reprogramming all 3 what?

The
I haven't read all of that...
doesn't tell me what path you were taking.

You probably should have been taking the long programing path in your situation. Adding 2 RKEs starts at #3. It assumes you have 1 & 2 in operating condition.

Default Problem restarting car after key programming

Your pdf table for the C7 is most helpful. Thanks Eboggs_jkvl.
Particulary about pressing the unlock button when done.

Its unclear to me how I screwed up on my first (and so far only) attempt to add another key. Perhaps I did not switch the back lock on fast enough or it was actually more than 5 times.

To feel comfortable, If I screw up can I be assured that no matter what after 10 minutes I can start the car with a previously working key -- no matter what?

You have working RKEs now, right? You are going to add an additional RKE to your RKE stable, right?

You would do the short method to add an RKE, NOT the long method. The short method keeps the RKEs you have functioning and adds more RKEs.

Read the short method steps and follow those instructions.

Default Can key in FOB be duplicated with another Chevy key?

Does anyone know if there is a "key blank" similar to what was available for the C6 that opens the trunk lid if cut to the key in the FOB? It was some Chevy model key but it was a "normal" key. Or can that even be done for the C7 key that is totally different from a normal key.?

The C7 key is laser cut and does not resemble the key for the C6.

Thanks for putting that together. You made a confusing process less confusing. I have a 3rd RKE I keep in my safe. The reason for the 3rd is because the original number 2 was misplaced by my wife and she then found it later after I bought a new one for her. Had the new one programmed at the dealer. I noticed that after she found the one she lost (the original number 2) it would still operate. What is the proper step to take under those circumstances? Thanks.

The new spare is programmed as #3. It does not contain nor control any of the memory settings. Since the wife found #2, use it and put #3 into the drawer as a spare. If either of you lose your RKE, you can do the long program and reset the 2 RKEs to #1 & #2.

Elmer Thank you for doing this.
My question relates to what my C6 did that I can't get my C7 to do. On the C6 I could set it via the DIC to honk the horn and flash the lights when I walked away from the car letting me know the doors were locked. I haven't found anything in the manual or DIC that will let me set the C7 up this way. Am I missing something or is this not available on the C7?

The C7 will do this. You need to go into the setup menu and set the options under "locking". The options are grayed-out unless the car is running.

Is that the settings on the center console monitor?
