How many of you are using the fiberglass sleeve spark plug wire protectors with your long tube headers? Are they really needed with them?

I had to put them on mine. If you have headers then you most likely should have them. I tried it without but I had a plug wire come into contact with the header and melted thru causing a misfire. I found some purple ones so had to get them. They've held up great so far.

I put them on mine along with the LT header install. The plug wires came close to the headers, so I figured it's cheap insurance.

Well worth the expense to keep the wires off the hot headers.

Mine are really close to the headers almost touching but they never melted or even looked burnt. To me it wasn't needed but if you have money to blow they are around 17 bucks shipped on ebay

I have the MSD wires along with a supercharger and not running any boots on my setup, and zero issues so far. never melted any of my plug wire's and they still look the same as the day installed them

Thats what i was thinking. I will probably just put them on to safe.

Seems like a cheap way to save yourself from a headache later. I have them on mine, you can even get with with the Corvette lettering one them for about the same price as the plain ones.

I have them on mine with my LT's , I think it's a peace of mind insurance! saves you a headache maybe !

I had ARH install headers at Carlisle a few years ago and went with new GM wires and they reused the factory heat shields.Clean install and zero issues.

"Needing" them entirely depends on the car, the headers, and the use. In my case, the car sees the track (road course) occasionally, which means VERY hot headers. Plus, when I installed my headers (XS Power), I noticed a few of the wires sat too close to the primary for my comfort. I bought a set of heat socks on eBay for $20 or so and installed them. Zero issues. In fact, when I took the car apart over the winter, I noticed some discoloration on a few of the socks from making contact with the header. If it weren't for the sock, that would have been the wire melting.

To me, it's cheap insurance. But get the car together and take a look. If there's ample spacing between the wires and the primary tubes, and the car is just a street car, it's probably not necessary.
