Is is possible to determine approximate build date from VIN
I'm looking at a Laguna Blue 2LT Z51 and was wondering if the approximate build date could be determined from the VIN.

The reason I ask is that my 2009 had sat on the lot for 6+ months and critters had chewed the wires for the backup lights
The dealer fixed at no charge but it was still a hassle and I would have bargained a bit harder had I known they'd been sitting on it that long.
Thanks

The VINs are issued in numerical order, so with a bit more info, like the starting VIN for 2016 and the total number of cars built in 2016, one should be able to estimate the month it was built.
Alternatively, if you know a friendly dealer I think dealers can pull up the build date from GM's system with a VIN.

Look at the sticker on the driver's door. That will at least tell you what month it was built.
You can also ask the dealer to show you the build sheets...... IF they kept them.
Our VIN ends in 5594 and was built on Jan 26, 2016 as a reference point.....

Yep, any dealer (and several folks on Corvette Forum) can give you the vehicle history from the VIN. You'd want that anyway before buying a used car, or a new one that sat around for a while.

I agree, based on the other dates provided mid March sounds right.
The car is 300 miles away so checking the door jam while easy wasn't as quick an option .
Thanks again everyone, if every thing falls into place I'll pickup the car Saturday.

I think I looked at that car very closely online and nearly drove there to buy it over Memorial weekend, is it in Austin? I bought a Laguna Blue Z51 3LT locally the same weekend and used their pricing as a bargaining chip. The car i bought last 6 of vin are 121752 and the build date was 04/16 so I believe March build date is accurate
edit-Different car but very close vin

The nice folks at the Corvette Museum can tell you the exact birth date of your Vette... but I'm not sure if you have to be there in person.
There was no charge....I just walked into a room with my VIN, and they looked it up on their computer.

The dealer fixed at no charge but it was still a hassle and I would have bargained a bit harder had I known they'd been sitting on it that long.
Thanks

Also the sticker date can be off by a week or so. I had a 2008 that had a door sticker build date of 08/2007 but when run through GMs system it showed up as 09/03. So what happens the sticker is put on the car the last day its on the line BUT GM records the build date when its been cleared by QC and OKd for shipment. All Corvettes stay in the QC system for a day or two past the day it comes off of the line, even longer if it has to have a repair or two. So I would tell you without a doubt the car was already fully built sometime the last week in Feb.

Question as a general rule can you figure that a June build date will the last month your model year car was built. July may have some of the prior year and some current year cars. August will usually be first full month production of next year model car? For example August 2016 produced cars will be early 2017 model year cars.

Call 1 (800) 222-1020 - Chevrolet Customer service. Go through the brief automated menu, when you get the CS rep they'll ask you for name phone, email, and address. Then tell them you need your vehicle's production date (I also told them it was to determine if the car was in a TSB date range...true) and provide your model year and last 8 digits.
Five minute process.
