Default Route 66 Test Drive Tomorrow

Since owning our C3 I haven't really driven it much out of the local area. Most of our activities have been related to local car club events. So tomorrow will be our first out-of-town 2 day road test.

It will test the car, our map reading skills, and our relationship. I installed an ejection seat just in case!

On Day 1 from San Diego, we'll head for the Santa Monica Pier, drive the route to San Bernardino then spend the night at the Wigwam Motel (we may regret that stay...sharing one queen size bed).

On Day 2, will drive the route to Barstow, then return to San Diego. If everything goes well, then next spring or fall I would like to complete the ride to our home town, Chicago.

On Monday, check the classified...there may be a red C3 vert listed for sale with a missing seat!

Where do the wings come out from? I know they have to be there somewhere.

Have fun

I hope all works well for you and your Vette. My daughter and I drove 66 from Chicago to Santa Rosa, NM after picking up my Great Uncles 78 SA in Michigan last year, bringing it to Colorado. Plan on doing the western half soon. Be aware that every town has something to draw you in and they all take time...

I got on 66 Monday from Bloomington il to Springfield il, just to say I was on it this summer. While it pretty much follows beside the interstate, you still get a feel and can almost picture what it must have been like to take the long trip. Next summer, I need to take it even further along.

Our two day Rt 66 journey is complete. The C3 ran beautifully in both city and on the high desert. Looking forward to completing the route this fall or next spring.

"Unofficial" end of Route 66.

Stayed at the WigWam Motel in Rialto, CA.

Small concrete strip of Old Rt 66 (pre-1926) located in the Cajon Pass just northeast of LA.

Great museum!

Location of first McDonalds. Its now just a museum, located in San Bernardino, CA

Bottle Tree Museum located on the way to Barstow, CA

Ha! You just inspired me to turn my 66 slideshow on. Looks like the western half will not disappoint. We had a couple of guide books and the Road Trip 66 app. I was amazed at how much of the old road was available even though interstates run very close. It was marked pretty good too.

I understand Illinois has done a good job of preserving the route. Looking forward to driving that segment plus my Chicago Italian Beef sandwich and Pizza low level warning light is illuminated.

Nice trip and great pictures I did the Route 66 trip back in 2000, leaving from Mass. Picked up 66 in Oklahoma and went all the way out to the Santa Monica Pier. Came back through Tahoe and Salt Lake City. Did 7,400 miles in 3 weeks. Great trip.

Barstow is kind of run down. I stayed at the "El Rancho" Motel. Interesting motel that must have been very special in it's day.

Great pics! I'm looking forward to doing some of the route this fall, probably through NM to begin with. Mostly chunks of road here and there but some great spots for pictures for sure.

Flight gear collector I see....Nice HGU55 helmet and MBU12 mask. Com block looks to be USAF and not Navy. My old collection well before cars and bikes made their way back in to my life..

Loved the photos. I plan on a Route 66 trip one day...one day.

Sounds like a blast! I love a good road trip in a Vette. Been to Barstow many time on the way from Bakersfield to Vegas. (not very scenic in Barstow though)

How cool.
Growing up as a kid, we would cruise Friday and Saturday nights in San Bernardino, CA. The original McDonalds was our turn around spot to head back down E Street. Great memories and a lot of L-60 rubber left at the exit of the parking lot. Burger, fries and a chocolate shake was about a buck and gas was .35 cents per gallon.
