Default Not a good year for the Vette

1st I needed to get my engine oil leak under control
I rerouted the PVC, that helped out quite a bit

Then the supercharger pulley destroys itself from the engine torquing it into the frame rail

Now, driving around town to see if I got it all straightened out I hit pothole in front of a railroad track and the mount for my coilover shock got TORN OFF the upright!

Pshhhhhhhh. All cheap fixes compared to what I've dealt with this year.

LOL Tell that to the oncoming traffic

I'm going to take it apart this weekend

Might be able to get it welded

If not, I'll have to locate another stock upright & a coilover over mount which needs to be modified to clear my rod end links. Then have it all welded up again.

Sounds like a year of bad luck! Hope you have better luck going forward.

Looks like I'll be needing a new upright & mount

I should probably rebuild the shock as well

BTW these mounts are NOT as they are sold.
I needed to reposition hole to get the clearance I needed.
In the process the bolt holding the shock on no longer aligns with the former shock bolt location.
The induced torque is what twisted the end of the casting off.

we should start a "2016 Damage so far list "
makes you feel a lot better when you see someone else with more damage ...

This is a first I've seen with a failure on the rear as a result of using coilovers. I've seen a couple issues with the front shock towers because of the coil overs.

Any tips on removing the stub axle nut?

Managed to break my breaker bar.

I'll get another one and perhaps another impact gun
My battery powered one won't cut it.

18 years of ownership never had to undo one.

I had one like that. I sprayed a lot of WD40 and I took my high pressure regulator, hooked it up to my nitrogen bottle and cranked it up to 300 psi. It spun that sucker off in less than a heart beat. More than likely you will have to go fetch the nut from across the street after you impact it. Also you will either have to rebuild your impact or throw it away.

Be safe and wear a faceshield just in case.

[QUOTE=BrianCunningham;1592942983]Any tips on removing the stub axle nut?

Perhaps just take the assembly to a place that works in heavy equipment or big trucks and use a 3/4" impact wrench.

Good luck,
Locke

That's what I did when mine wouldn't come loose. The place I took it to had a 1' impact gun took them a couple min and they were off, charged me like $10.

Went out and got a 3/4 drive breaker bar and appropriate socket

I'm STANDING ON it and it will won't move

Hit the end of the breaker bar with a sledge, still nothing.

I used 3/4 drive with pipe, total about 5 feet. Spud bar in the wheel studs kept it from turning and did not damage the studs. Had to use acetylene and oxygen and heated the nut red, finally came loose.

Another time on a c5. I wouldn't really recommend this one, but it worked. I put a 2x6 or 2. It supported the 3/4 drive parallel to the ground, eased the clutch till it was snug and then showed it who was boss! Although I don't know if I would do it again, was lucky once and didn't break anything.

The posted idea heavy equipment shop with 1 inch might be what I try next time.
Good luck

FINALLY!
My neighbor had length of steel pipe that I trusted as a cheater bar.
That got the nut to move.

Got the upright off the car.

The damage looks weldable.
The shock on the other hand.
The rod is no longer centered in the body.
It probably got torqued.
I'll have to tear it down and see what's going on.

Hi Brian
I used my stock shock mounting studs that I machined down to fit the coilover shock Spherical Bearing mount.
I left a shoulder to hold the shock out for clearance of the coil spring.
I think I still have them in a parts drawer somewhere if you'd like to try them.
I also have a nice pair of uprights on the shelf.

Thanks for the offer

what diameter did you turn them down to?
My be interested in purchasing a set

Dropped the rear shocks and upright off

Here's hoping for good news

Seems obvious that the shock bottomed out before hitting the bump stops
I'm pricing some shorter rods

Update

The shocks are off getting rebuilt with shorter rods
The upright is JUNK, cannot be repaired
Coming up with a different mount scheme

Of course that means buying 2 so they match.
