Default I got an exhaust recommendation- lets discuss!

Ok, I have a "firm recommendation" from my exhaust guy (http://www.kinneysmufflershop.com/ki....com/HOME.html).

My goals are 1) zero/super low drone, 2) increase in performance and 3) reasonable sound- (more American muscle than Jaguar).

My guy suggests taking out the stock system and putting in an "X" pipe immediately follow by "bullet" type resonators finished with Delta 40 mufflers.

Also, I did place my order for "the chip." from Marc Haibeck so I need to factor that into the equation.

I have an appointment tentatively scheduled for next Wednesday so I have time to tweak.

What do you all think? Will this accomplish my goals?

I think you'll resonate like crazy. I could be wrong but until the new B&B came out with the internal flaps (and Ive not heard it personally), Corsa has been the only guaranteed way not to resonate.

I've gone through 4 systems in 6 years (one is the stock set) so I don't know... It is a personal journey you will have to make. One man's music is resonance and drone to another.

it is highly likely you won't be completely happy with a louder system. Just having taken out my resonator, but retaining the stock mufflers is not nearly as loud as any aftermarket system or custom concoction. Trouble is the oem mufflers choke hp on the top end.

It will be interesting what it is like with two bullets rather than one center resonator. Right now I am leaning towards the Borla center resonator and mufflers. Or the 93-95 zr1 system put on our 90.

Corsa from what I understand is pretty loud....A forum friend of mine was running one on a 91.....He switched over to full OBX exhaust and headers..I'm running the same on my 91, I like it a lot....

I feel whichever system you run there will be some droan in sixth gear at highway speeds....No drone in fifth with the OBX but sixth is a different story unless your doing 80-85 and above...

Whatever you do just please don't put Flowmaster Delta 40 mufflers on the car as suggested by the exhaust shop. They belong on 60's muscle cars and fox-body mustangs and the like and their sound does not fit the image of a C4 ZR1 at all, IMO.

So what would be better? Delta 50s or 60s? Or something different total?

Honestly I wouldn't put anything flowmaster on it, in my opinion it will take away from the car. As others have suggested Corsa is a great option but it is a bit pricey. I haven't heard a ZR1 with Magnaflow but I wouldn't be surprised if they may have some good options to consider.

If you want an increase in performance but are worried about droan and what not, just put a set of headers on it leading into the stock cat back...

This way you will increase the performance somewhat because the stock manifolds on the 91 really choke things up..Down the line you can add whatever cat back you choose once you hear a few.

I have heard that the long since discontinued flowmaster complete system was good on ZR-1's, but it was the entire pipe set- not just mufflers thrown on.

The Corsa is the easiest to install because it fits so well under the differential, but it is only 2.5" which is smaller than stock. It still flows well because it's pretty much straight through. It does not drone, which is nice, but it is pretty much like having muffler eliminators. I judge my exhaust system experiences by if I was ever pulled over and the Corsa is definitely a cop-caller.

Obviously a very personal decision. I went with full SW system, headers to tips and am running metal matrix cats as well. Drone at 1800 rpm. SW is full 3" end to end. I love the exhaust note. I had Corsa Sport on my 2006 LS2 and loved them, but definitely different sound. They were truly a screamer at the track making sub 12 second quarter mile runs! I'm going to dynamat my ZR-1, focusing on extra insulation in the rear to tone it down on the inside at 1800 rpm.

I have Flow master 40's on my '51 Chevy truck running a small block. They sound stellar on this setup, not sure I'd want them on my LT-5 however. Good luck and remember it's your car, make the choice that you like most!

OK.

Started in 1992 with stock.
A new LT-1 92 Vette had mufflers with more bark than my ZR-1

So stock, had to go!

Next was Borla.
Stainless!
Pretty good looks.
BUT
" WHERE'S THE SOUND?"

Next
Power Effects - Tunable
Good Looking!
OK sound when opened.
HEAVY
No stainless!

NEXT!

B & B 3" Tri-Flow
GREAT LOOK!
Stainless!
Well made
DEEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too quiet!
One Muffler came loose at top end first gear.
FINALLY!!! That was the sound I wanted!
Went to custom shop next day.
Removed both mufflers ( retained resonator ).
Added more 3" stainless with single Magna Flow Tips!

Have had a brand new B&B Fusion System in my garage for over 2 years, but just cannot bring myself to tamper yet with success.

Drone?
Yes, so what!

Loud?

Yes!

That is why I did it!

Happy?

VERY MUCH SO!

Last comments

Corsa?
Everyone loves them.
They sound more F1 than muscle at scream to me, and too quiet at less than WOT, but that's just me.

Flowmaster?

Excuse me.
They are RIGHT for a muscle car, but what, wrong for a ZR-1?
OK if you say so, that's OK by me, although I do not understand that.
However.
I have NEVER heard anything with Flowmasters that I did not like!

Their old ZR-1 system was simply the best sound, but it was aluminum not stainless, so I hesitated.
(should have just bought 2)

I see no doom and gloom going with your flowmaster route.
Your shop seems VERY experienced, and they are comfortable with it,
So
WHY NOT?

Most ZR-1's have had multiple exhaust systems, so if you do not like it, just pass them on and try again!
No law says you can only try once.
Best of luck!

MARTY

p.s.

BTW
at idle, the no muffler route is deep but very quiet.
If I pass law enforcement out of town, foot off the gas, in goes the clutch, sound disappears!
I can idle away from the house to Carlisle or a show at 5:00 A.M. without waking a soul!

Had dual 3s,bullet resonators, dynomax superturbos which are quieter than any flo, still had resonance problems and im pretty tolerant.
Biggest mistake was going to 3" just made anything louder.
Quietest its going to be is bone stock.

I have some B&B 'mufflers' that I had removed off my ZR1... if you want them... $100 for the pair plush shipping and they're yours.

Best Regards,
Dave
