Default Replace Console Cigarette Lighter with USB Socket

I am considering replacing the cigarette lighter in the console for a USB socket that does not need an adapter. I currently use a cigarette lighter charger adapter. But, it is large and takes up precious space in an already tight compartment. Seems like this might a great update for this USB powered everything world we live in.

Maybe install one of these in the back storage compartment

Have any of you guys done this, and is it working for you?

Yep. I have one that has a lip that is barely enough to pull out once its in. Has 2 ports on it. Look up aukey chargers on amazon. All fairly cheap and removable

I find that those burn out pretty quick. Maybe because I buy cheap ones.

That has been my experience as well. That is why I am considering replacing the old-school cigarette lighter socket with a USB socket. One more thing. Very often, adapters (the really small ones) are not deep enough to properly hold make good contact inside the cigarette lighter socket.

Because I no longer smoke, I think that replacing the socket inside the center console storage compartment might be a perfect solution. I will keep the one located under the AC controller, in case I need to power some other device dash strobe, radar detector, etc.

Those adapters look pretty good. It would be nice to have a USB connector in the car.

I use a few different 12v cig lighter to USB adapters. I've wasted money on crappy ones that can't charge your phone fast enough if the screen stays on etc. I highly recommend getting a quality brand one to take advantage of the latest 'fast charge' type technologies. Pay attention to the amp output-- but in my experience even ones that look good on paper don't always work very well.

I've had great luck with the brand Anker and will continue to use their products for this type of stuff.

I use one like this right now: https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Charger...sb+car+charger

Have any of you guys done this, and is it working for you?

I've done this with a very similar dual port and a plate. easy to wire, never gets lost. Only gotcha is the size of the ports behind the plate, you may have to make some extra room for the plumbing.

Amazon Amazon

Would this work and be plug and play?

I am looking for 2+ amp for rapid charging for two phones.

My cigarette lighter socket spins and is broken/not working... don't care to have one, so I was hoping to replace the cigarette lighter in the center of the console (under climate control) with something that's just two dual USB 2amp+ chargers

This setup is dual 3A USB plugs

That's really neat, but I was hoping to remove the cigarette lighter all together, no need for it.

Ahmed,

Here is what I did something similar to what you are talking about.

The picture kind of bad because the blue LED light is on. But you can see that I install the dual power unit inside the space where the ashtray was located.

This one and the one in the OP are really just cigarette lighter USB adapters with a fancy spaded receiver added. You should be able to pull the section with the ports out of the tube, and you'll see.
