What is the cost of replacing an engine?
Assume you do not have warranty..... and the engine croaks. What would be the total out of pocket expenses to replace the engine?

There are a few used complete motors on ebay. Most low miles. One even has under 10 miles and comes with the transmission. This one is $15,000. The others run between $10,000 and $12,000. I would assume going this route would be cheaper and easier because they are complete with sensors and harnesses. I don't know how much a new engine from GM would be and I don't know if they are long blocks, short blocks or complete engines. Probably much more money.
I would assume labor would be at least 10-12 hours under warranty. I would bet double under customer paying the bill.

The WHOLE engine usually doesn't croak so replacing the part that breaks can be done cheaper I am sure. Especially since you should upgrade whatever broke and maybe stuff around it at the same time.

I'm asking for a whole engine replacement, to bound the costs of a different problem. THINK, buying someone's supercharged Z51.. There's no warranty, sure it has more power, but its also more likely to have a failure. What are the bounds on the costs of replacing the issues caused by that failure. ---Asking what are the costs to replace an engine, is a pretty good bound on that problem.

A complete LT1 crate engine is $11,644 MSRP. You could likely get it a bit cheaper from a forum vendor. I'd contact a vendor like Trunk Monkey to see if long blocks are available as that is likely to be much cheaper.
I would guess labor on an R&R would be ~$5,000k.

rebuild not replace. GM wants a fortune for the LTx. You can rebuild it for 3-5 grand (as long as there's not a hole in the block of course).

Clearly if you puke a rod out the side of the block, you're going to be looking at a replacement. But if the supercharger causes detonation and breaks a ring land, the block will survive usually. Cranks can be turned, heads replaced, all of that sort of thing.

Figure $12K for the new Z51 Dry Sump Engine and a week of labor plus other materials such as coolant, oil, miscellaneous parts maybe an engine mount or two.
The advantage of replacing an engine Vs rebuilding it is you get a warranty from GM. GM doesn't seem to rebuild engines as it is lower cost for them to just replace the engine Vs rebuild. With a rebuilt engine they really don't know what they have while they have a long history with complete engines coming off the line.
I suspect if you go with a highly reputable shop that rebuilds a lot of engines and doesn't take short cuts you may be able to knock $5K off the cost of the crate engine but the warranty won't be the same.

Engine replacement
I am in the process of having my engine replaced on my 2014 C7 Z51 a6 and the cost with labor came out to be 17k and some change. If you go through gm when purchasing the engine it does come with a warranty. I’m unsure if it’s a 3yr/36k mile or a 5yr100k mile.

That $17K amount is close to another person who posted that it was $16,000 installed for a brand new LT1.
BTW, we have seen between $28K-$30K installed pricing on a brand new LT4.

My LT1 dropped a valve and cracked a head. Dealer quoted me $14K Canadian to replace the motor. (Not under warranty) That price likely would've gone higher had I agreed to do the work. I did not and sent it to LPE to be rebuilt, stroked and made bulletproof.

What I find funny is I am hearing more and more about LT1 dropping valves ....
