Default Transmission Shift Cable



Removed Transmission Shift Cable from my 2010 Base, 43,000 miles.



They actually look pretty good. Maybe a little yellow which is to be expected but no cracking. They probably would have lasted a lot longer. Oh well, peace of mind.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I've been debating whether to change out a 2008 with 35,000 miles. The thing is, if it fails while on the road somewhere you're kind of at the mercy of the universe.

How long did it take to R&R it?

I just did not want to get stuck wishing I had replaced it when I could have to save me the grief. Some cables look worse with less miles. Some look better. Guess it depends on the climate, how hard you drive it. Not really sure. It took right at 4 hours. We were trying not to break anything...which we did not. We did remove the exhaust and the tunnel cover which gave us a "little" more room. It was still very tight. Glad it's over. Got it done in time so we can take it to the Long Beach Grand Prix Friday!

I have an '07 with 30k miles and I HAVE to change it this summer. I do NOT want to get stuck somewhere with a broken cable.

Thanks to HBSurfer, who sent me his old cable, at least I know what the damned thing looks like.

If Bruze posts a pic of my cable, it had about 35,000 miles on it and was on my 2007.
It looked pretty good but maybe a little worse than the photos Vet just posted.
Mine was probably fine but considering the grommets are plastic, I would think that failure would be sudden. Metal will slowly fatigue and show wear over time but plastic just snaps. I think appearances in this case may be misleading.

Agree about the plastic and sudden failure. That's what scared the hell out of me!! Ya never know when.

Mine failed with no warning tonight. '07 with 70K miles. I started the car and shifted to drive except it went to Reverse. Shifter now moves easily and the car is confused about why I won't shift to Park when I shut it off. Normally I'd fix this myself but it is parked on a gravel driveway in the sun. Now for the dreaded call to a dealer who may or may not know how to lift a Corvette without breaking rockers.

purchased the grommets with full intention of replacing both ends this past winter while the car was in my garage in hibernation.
I got busy on other stuff (renos) and didn't do it. My car is a 2006 with 85K miles on it.
I'm hoping that I get the summer driving without any issues with the cable.

I live in a moderate climate, with temps that rarely reach past 90F for more than a few weeks during the summer. Most times it's between 75-85 F from June 1- September 1.
That may help keep the plastic grommets from getting too hot and becoming brittle.

or.....it could break tomorrow!

I'm hoping for no issues. I'll have to make sure that I replace them in the Fall.

changed the cable on my 07 recently with about 78k miles - the old cable actually looked fine but now I have peace of mind for at least ten years because I would not want to get stuck somewhere at the mercy of some unknowns, part availability is also an issue as my dealer had to order the part in which took two days

Mine broke a few weeks ago stranding me at the gas station. Took it to a trusted transmission shop and had a new cable put in along with a new filter and fluid. Paid $523 in total. works great now.

Had my 95k car in the shop to replace the HUD, and during the process the cable ends just disintegrated when they took off the console.
They charged my $205 to replace it, and so glad they found out it was bad.

Sorry it took so long to get back with a final report. Dealer charged retail ($55) for the cable and 2 1/2 hours labor for an out the door price of just under $400. It would have been another $100 for diagnosis if I hadn't told them what was needed. It would have been MUCH more if the cable had not been the problem.

$55.00 is right for the cable,, but they must be charging $125.00 per hr for labor which is pretty standard for the dealers.
You might check to see if they give a discount for club members of a club.
My dealer only charges $75.00 hr and 20% off parts for members of our club. If you have all your work done at the dealer,, that can add up in a hurry. Personally I do as much of the work as I can. But at $45.00 for oil and filter change,, it's not worth it for me to do it my self.

I'm just waiting for it to break, no it's coming. Had few friends had it break already dealer's here charge $500.00.

I only go to a dealer if I absolutely positively have no other means of getting the car repaired. In this case the car was at the bottom of a valley, in reverse, unable to start again, on a gravel surface that was barely covering mud. It had already sunk into the drive an inch or so when it was towed out. No way to get under it. I could have had it towed somewhere else but, after talking to the dealership I thought I would cross my fingers and give them a chance. As I have said here before, in 50 years of going to dealerships I have not found a single one that has not at one time or another, screwed me. This dealership is no exception and probably the worse one I ever went to but, for this job, they seem to have done totally acceptable work.

BTW, I had a bowling teammate who took his car to the dealership for an oil change. They called him to the cashier, he paid for the job, and they gave him the keys. He went out and started the car and the oil light just continued to burn. Turns out they had drained the oil but not put any back in. To this day he insists that is a great dealership.
