Descreening the maf has been covered like 7000 times, some say the screens are to straighten the airflow for accurate measurement, some say it doesn't matter, some say if you take the screens out and throw them away, they will haunt you in your sleep

I leave my screen in, just in case a small particle cuts through the sensor wire. If you cut the heat sink like a lot have done, will the MAF electronics overheat?!?
I had tried running without screens, did not notice the slightest change before and after.
Yes these things can haunt you, the more you think about it

If you want performance that you can feel, bolt on a set of long tube headers. Best bang for buck, C4s love long tube headers.
They will knock almost a second of the 1/4 time, I have done the before and after. Standard when I got my c4 ran the quarter in 14.4, next week cold air intake set fuel pressure to 50 psi and long tube headers she ran 13.1
Just don't expect your transmission to last too long......

An exchange MAF is about $150, and yes, combined with the other simple L98 mods it does make a difference, but not on its own much.
The screens aren't filters and will still allow dust in there. I give mine an annual blast with a can of carb and choke cleaner. Been like that for about 8 years now.

If it were mine, depending on the level of mods done to the car, I would leave them in place unless you feel that they are limiting the maximum amount of airflow that your engine can take in. (I don't know your mods, if any) Stock cars are probably no where near maxing out the intake snorkel/filter assembly and are more limited by the intake manifold design itself in terms of airflow.
I don't believe the MAF is a limitation of airflow unless you're making big power.

Hi..
This guide worked for me. I did all the simple mods and my '87 is running really well, and pulling much stronger than it ever did, so I reckon a combination of all these things does have an effect..

The screens can hardly straighten the flow, with nil thickness of any possible linear surface(s). They do, however, protect that delicate sensing wire! There are, in those 7000 discussions, forum stories about damage to it, due to "modifications".
I suspect any lab-sensed increase in flow was due way less due to screen removal and really due to the other interior "smoothing".
