Default What do you think of this trim tag

This Trim-Tag affixed on a 1972 Convertible

What do You Think ?

1- marks on Rivet Heads

2 - scuff marks 360 degrees under Rivit-Heads

3 - straight lines/identations/marks where it appears tag was on those marks

What Do You Think
(i have another theory for later)

If its a fake, it has me fooled.
I am familiar with the fakes made by trimtag.com who have been making them since 1988 and that tag does not have the mistakes that they make on theres.
Its possible it was taken off and reattached for some reason but to me it looks real. But I could be wrong.

My guess would be it was a little rusted so someone tried to clean it up without removing it, but couldn't get to some spots.

Looks okay to me. Shows it's age.

Hi,
Is the 'paint line' simply the result of a poor job of taping the trim tag when the car was repainted?
Regards,
Alan

When I polished the aluminum frame on my snowmobile all the rivets ended up looking like that because none of the sanding or polishing tools would get to the area around the rivet except for a small wire brush. My guess is that it was a quick cleaning job.

That was my thought too.

OK Tom, tell us your theory.

My Theory
i think the rivets became loose - the tag jiggled around a bit - then the head of the rivets were hit with a punch to tighten them

I have no idea how the date, color and trim codes were stamped... Where they stamped individually or all at once....? The reason I ask is because my 72 looks to have the same spacing and placement as the one Green 71 posted, the OP tag doesn't have the same spacing.

Here is mine....

Sorry to post on this thread, but I was reading it and didn't know you can order new trim tags. Our car does not have one, and I just purchased the original invoice to find out what this car truly was. So I do have the original color and interior color with options. I am not looking to commit fraud but I wouldn't mind putting a trim tag back for the future owner whom ever that is.

Is this even legal? has anyone ever done that before and if you have, can you offer any info on the process?

Thanks in advance

here are pics of the trim tag on the 1972 "489-Miler'
sorry about the angle - could not open the door all the way, due to cramped space in the garage

I'll bet someone here knows how they were stamped.

Side by side comparison:

Tom....That answers my question. The 489 looks to have about the same spacing as the original tag you posted so I will go out on a limb and say they were not all stamped at the same time.

Trim tags were stamped individually on an Addressograph machine very similar to the type used to stamp military dog tags. I believe I read somewhere there were two Addressograph machines at St. Louis.

I think the only tag you can get in trouble with messing with it is the VIN. Trim tags are just information on the paint and interior colors and options.

My take:

That trim tag is either:

1) correct for the car and just has "maintenance issues" due to age and painting;
2) correct for the car, but it was removed for car painting and replaced on the car;
3) correct for a production C3 car...but not for that one (swapped out for paint/color changes).

This may not be as nefarious as it appears...just one question....was the car re-painted at any point in it's history? (From the marks it sure HAS!)

Remembering that a Trim Tag is not a VIN tag....good body shops would remove them to paint the door jamb.

Not a big deal. Do the codes match the original car?
