Do you have to drop the tank to change out unit?I was told you can get it from
the top.

It comes out pretty easy, if you replace the gasket, it can only go on one way, the bolts around the filler are not the same spacing.... Good luck...

I've removed mine 3 times. The first time I did it I fiddled and twisted for what seemed like hours before I finally got t out. The second time I followed hugh9222's directions exactly and it was a breeze. Thanks Hugh.

Yep, through the top and it is pretty easy and straight forward actually. I have only seen one 82 that I could not go through the top and that was due to someone removing the tank previously and when installed was not lined up the way it should be and was off enough that you could not get the pump assembly out of the hole no matter what. Other than that, it should come out easily.
