I'm wanting to throw on wider wheels in the back so I can get more traction. Someone told me that if I did that the car would go into a "limp mode" and always think that I am spinning my tires and what not and the speedo would go out of whack. Is this true? If so how do I get it to where it won't do that? I'm wanting to go with a 17x11-12 for the rear.

as long as you keep the rear tires at least .5" larger in overall diameter than the front tires it should still allow the traction control/active handling to work as designed... you can also turn it completely off and run whatever size tire you want... tire compound and sidewall are more important than width but an 11" wide wheel should fit fine as long as they are the correct offset

I may just turn it all off. I'm building up a drag car and possibly a roll racer, I usually turn off traction control for races. I know tire compound is important and thats why i have Nitto NT05 street radials on. For the moment i have 378 to the rear and I still have traction issues with and without the controls on . Next step was to get wider rims.

Its not the width of the rim, it's the height of the tire that affects the traction control and active handling.

So if I get a 17x12 rim with slicks, I have to make the height of the setup the same as the stock setup? For smaller rim add thick tire, and for larger rim add thinner tire?

Nice and I found some 17x11 weld racing rims that I might get. then grab some Nitto NT05R drag radials or Hoosier (if they make that size)

what matters for the abs/tc stuff is the tire height. oem tire height is 26.7" tall. so you will need to find a slick/drag radial tire with that height for your rim diameter (17") and enough width to fit the wheel. problem is finding a 17" tire to fit your needs. you may have to drop to 16".

best to ask in the drag racing section what they are using. you don't necessarily need the wide rim to achieve what you need.

WIll a 16" rim even fit over the rotor and caliper? and I'm having traction issues with the 9.5 wide Nt05 right now lol wider is needed

Sounds like a better tire would do the trick. My '04 Z was making nearly 400rwp, and I rarely broke my Conti ExtremeContact DW's loose. FYI, I was running 295-35-R18's out back. Practice makes perfect.
