GM made me an offer I could easily refuse
So I got a big marketing sheet in the mail yesterday offering to allow me to upgrade my 2015 Z to a 2017, for only $891 a month for 60 months! That's right, just my pristine 2015 with 5000 miles and $53,460 in cash and I'd be able to have front cameras. But their own marketing isn't that clever, it just says "New Technology" under "What's new".
A big portion of the incentive is to get a new warranty. And it makes a big deal that mine has only 13 months left.
At which point I thought... waitaminnute, GM! Wasn't my 2015 warranty a 5 year powertrain and now it's only 3, so since I'm almost exactly 2 years in, they should ironically be about equal!
Where do they come up with the 13 months remaining part, is that for the bumper to bumper portion I assume? I went nuts with the 10 year "Platinum" GM warranty anyway, since the price was right (or wrong, but it was low enough I took it).
So shouldn't a used 2015 have about the same powertrain warranty as a brand new 2017 right now?

GM or a local dealer? I didn't know GM did this direct.
If it was a local dealer, they may not have any way to cross-reference what your current warranty is. Its just a mailer to drum up conversation...which it did.

It appears to be GM, and the dealer contact on the sheet is the dealer I bought from (not very local). The fine print says "(c) Auto Alerts Cash" or something similar. So I can't really tell where it originated from.

They usually refer to the B2B 36 month warranty since that is the important one. Most failures on modern cars are related to parts not in the power train. It is rare to have a serious power train failure outside of the first 3 years until the mileage gets pretty high.
The power train warranty isn't that big of a deal and one of the reasons it dropped from 100K miles over 5 years to 60K miles over 5 years was it wasn't all that important to Customers. Even with cars that are driven the average 60K miles over 5 years what difference does it make if you have 40K miles left on an expired warranty????
What I find interesting is their offer to take your car off your hands without paying you very much for it.

Maybe it is the GM version of the Nigerian prince email scam. If they send out enough bad offers maybe they will find a few people dumb enough to bite.
Looks like neither the Nigerian scammers nor GM will be getting Dave's money

Now Warp, you missed the point of my answer....and surely you followed a few pieces of the most recent Presidential election. You know, that's the one the Dems can't let go of and keep talking about. "Alternative facts" was the term that Trump's female dragon slayer, Kellyanne Conway, coined in one of her interviews. And for a moment, it left all the news wizards speechless. Your explanation is waaay too complicated....I still liked Kellyanne's.

Got a phone call last week from a woman saying that the warranty on one of our cars was about to expire. Interesting because all of our cars are still all covered under warranty. When I asked which car she was referring to, she hung up.
