Default How big is your fan?

1975 Coupe

I know it's a stupid question, but....

Motor is not original, it is from a Z28 (1980 vintage). I think whoever put the motor in, kept the Z28 fan....

Anyway the fan on the car measures about 17 1/2 inches fan edge to edge MOL.

The shroud is without extension and the fan seems to be higher than the top edge of the shroud as it sits.

Thanks,

Len

17.5 inches is the approx. correct did for your C 3 fan. However, the fan should sit partially within the shroud to pull max air through the radiator. The distance between fan and engine (and extension of fan into shroud) is determined by the thermostatic fan clutch. Check to see if your engine has one.

Yes there is a thermostatic clutch. The issue is that the fan height (edges of the fan) extend ABOVE the shroud by at least 1/4 inch or more. Without the shroud extension, it sits outside the shroud. There would be no way I'd be able to add the extension as it wouldn't fit because the fan would be in the way.

Odd.

Are there vertical adjustments for the shroud?

The extension should rise up enough to cover the blade...

So then the fan edges (without the extension) ARE above the shroud?

NO. I just measured my shroud..19" diameter.

I guess I'm not making myself clear..... When I mount the radiator and it's support, and the shroud, my fan A) Is higher than the shroud and B) is about 2" from the shroud.

So either the fan is too high or the shroud is too low. If the motor was running and I was able to push the fan forward, it would hit the top of the shroud.

My shroud diameter is also 19" - almost 20 top to bottom. That's not my issue... the fan and shroud don't seem to want to line up.

Does the bottom of the shroud sit on top of the cross member?

IMHO, my shroud seems to be riding too low.

Just another thought,,, the Camaro water pump may be placing the fan in the odd position, their are many variations of a SBC water pump, besides what has been said about the clutch and fan sizing, not knowing what you really have, it will be difficult to determine what is really out of place, , , , teddy
