ECS-1500, Need head unit advice. Rebuild or upgrade
I'm completely happy with the way my car runs and drives. Love the power for the street and really see no need to add more power. It drives near stock and really runs well when I'm in it. I just don't want to have to replace a head unit every few years.(This was may fault)
Set up:
06Z with forged LS7 10.2:1
Mantic 9000 Twin
AHP heads
ARH 1-7/8
Alky control single noz
FORE Twin set up / Flex sensor and ID1300's
ECS 1500 with 10% over lower and 3.4 upper. (over spun woops) I think 10 over is 8"
BTR spec mild blower cam. Drives like stock.
Dewitts full size. The SL1500 just fits.
This blower has been on the car for right at 12,500 miles and over spun for about 2,250 of them. But not really pushed that often in that 2,250 miles.
It was making 14.5lbs of boost. I know I need to slow it down as it will run cooler, I could then add more timing and probably make more power safer.
With that said, the head unit died. So now I'm confused on what to do.
Do I send the head unit to Vortech for a total rebuild? I'm not sure how much that costs, I will call them on Tuesday. I would slow it down to the recommended speed and hope it still doesn't fail again.
Stay self lubricated or go oil fed?
Do I go to an oil fed unit of equal size? What would that be?
Do I go to a 2200HD unit and slow it down to keep the peak power the same? Wont this hurt my low end and mid range power? Who has made the change and are you happy?
I see no need to make over 800 Tire when this is mainly a street use car. I need to draw a line some where or it will turn into more parts that will need upgraded or replaced.
I'M okay with running another SL1500 and slowing it down, I just want to make the right choice.

How much it costs..depends what is wrong. Likewise for whether it might fail again etc.
As for most other queries, I'm sure ECS could advise and also arrange any repairs etc ?
But buy bigger....and it'll cover you for anything in the future, and I doubt there is anyone unhappy with a bigger blower ! lol

If you're happy with the power, just pulley up and you'll have a very reliable and fun street car. I have a similar build and I'm keeping it within the limits of my self -contained Ti-trim. More power, more problems.

I went through a similar situation with my last car and set up. 1500SL over spun for a few thousand miles and it ate itself. Sent off to Vortech for rebuild ($1450) slowed it down ... and it ate the bearings again in under 1500 miles! Vortech offered me the 2200 HD for $900 and I took the offer (no longer trusted the old 1500 unit).
Since I had the 2200 and my car already had an ERL 416 - why not go for broke, I thought. So I ordered A&A new direct drive set up and balanced combo. Never got to run any of it though. My house was in a fire and I lost the car in the fire. Life is almost back to normal (post fire) and I've got a new car and all the go fast parts, that I never got to use.
So like you, I'm wanting less than 800 (725-750 would be nice) but unsure if I should use the 2200 or spend $2600 on a new 1500SL????

Sorry about the fire as well. Cars can be replaced, loved ones can not.
Did the offer any warenty on the rebuild unit? I'd go that route as long as they offer a warranty.
I don't think the larger dongle needed for the air intake will clear my full size DeWitts. I almost couldn't get this one in.

I would assume the 2200 is going to be larger and require more room then the 1500. There's no more room. What are you guys doing to get it to fit?

Inlet is only 1/4" larger if I recall correctly

Wonder if you have to push the top row of the radiator down a little to get a little more room maybe?

2200/Ysi fits fine with ECS dongle and stock or full size dewitts.
I would not upgrade. 1500 is perfect c6 blower. Just don't over spin them. Keep them in the ~800rwhp range, and enjoy.

Would you replace with the same head unit or convert over to an oil fed unit or the same size?

Oil fed with the HD bearings if that is an option.
Just don't over spin it. If you do overspin a blower, any blower, expect to be replacing it on a regular basis.

I sent the head unit out today. I'm sure i'm looking at 2-3 weeks by the time I get it back. I will update when I hear back.
