Trying to figure out why it's smoking
I'm just starting to play with cars so I'm fairly inexperienced. It is an 84 vette smoking from the tailpipes, I will post a link to a video.
Info on the car. I just bought it a couple of weeks ago so I could have a good car play with. It has been converted to carbureted. It has a mild cam in it but I'm not sure what it is. It has vortech heads and a holley 750 double pumper. It doesn't have any cats, not sure if that would have an effect on the smoke.
When I got the car it was running overly rich and the float levels were high enough that hitting a bump would cause it to flood. When I changed out the the spark plugs they were covered in oil. The new ones don't seem to be collecting oil. The oil was also very clean when I changed it.
Im just trying to get ideas about what would cause the smoking before I tear down the engine.

I would first remove the carb and put on a smaller one. That is WAY to many CFM for that engine.

It's time for a compression test. Here's a pretty good video. Disconnect the pink wire from the drivers side of the distributor to disable the ignition. Remove all of the spark plugs, and mark each spark plug wire so they go back correctly after the test. Block the throttle partly open during the test.

Well, I'm slowly trying everything. I ran a compression test, all the cylinders were around 150. I took the heads off yesterday so I can replace the head gasket and valve seals.

Vortec heads ae the best heads chevy came out with for the SBC. Your car should run pretty good, maybe in the 13s at the strip. Automotive smoke has 3 colors warning you of where to look for problems, or clues. White is coolant. Black is fuel. Blue is oil. Sometimes smell is just as important. Coolant and oil have their own smell, as well as gas. BTW, your car have headers? kinda sounded like it. Get yourself a factory repair manual , it will go a long way in helping you. A factory, not a Helms or that other one. I think CDs can be had, not sure. Hope you have a "gear head" friend to sort of show you the ropes. One last thing.. Always, always, safty first.

I finally got around to replacing the head gaskets. Now under the valve covers the oil is mixed with coolant. Does that mean I most likely screwed up the head gaskets or the intake gaskets

Generally blue smoke is oil, does it happen constantly or just at start up?

hope you told the parts folks you have vortec heads.... I THINK they use a different head gasket. Vortec heads didn't come out till either 91 or 96, I forget. Just telling parts folks you have a 84 wont do.
