Default Repaint cost on nice body

OK, let me start by by saying that I did do a search and came up with some info. What I learned is that prices are all over the place, and they seem to change yearly.

So, here is the question..

A 67 convertible has a very nice (9 out ot 10) paint job on it. Car was restored and has less that 10K miles on it.

Trim tag is original and indicates the car was originally a different color.

We all know this impacts the value of the car, and I an NOT asking how much.

What I am wondering is what is would cost to do a body on the chassis strip to primer and repaint this car the correct color. Correct color is Goodwood Green.

I will go out on a limb, based on the car, and say that body repair work will be minimal, as this was all done prior to the repaint the wrong color.

Car is an original motor 300hp, 4 speed car with no other real factory options.

Rough cost to strip and repaint Goodwood Green?

All replies greatly appreciated.

Can't say for sure what yours would cost in Huntsville but having just gone through this in Huntsville on my 65 w/ bodywork it was $25K which I still to this day think was high but at this point it is what it is. My car was already 80% stripped.

In 2008 I delivered a different 65 to the body shop that was 100% stripped and needed no body work. Paint job was $8K, this was in Jacksonville FL.

Options are limited in Huntsville for someone to do this and there is always a get in line answer. If I had to do this again from Huntsville I would trailer the car to Jacksonville FL to get it painted.

That last paint job soured me on the whole paint job process and I plan to paint my current 71 project myself.

Better add $5K on to anything you come up with.

"Stripping to primer" is rolling the dice on a disaster. That's how you get problems and paint bubbles -- ask me how I know...

Any price should include a "back to glass" preparatory step. Otherwise you are banking EVERYthing that some other party did things correctly.

I would not strip a restored car with a fresh urethane paint job. Why would anyone?

I think the premise is to get back to the original color on the trim tag; presumably for judging or to increase its 'flip' value

And this is the reason you find a car in a color you like with a decent paint job. From your previous posts with a budget of $50K some of the prices you are hearing is up to 1/2 of your budget. Not to mention the time it takes to have it done and lose of enjoyment during that time.

How much are you willing to spend is the question.

Not to even mention project creep....with shiny new paint suddenly those bumpers look a little dingy and the stainless a bit scuffed....then there are those rock dings in the windshield....and, well, you get the idea.

And the beat goes on...

You can 'back into' a full restoration just trying to UN-fornicate a previous paint job...

Having a corvette in the paint shop can be expensive and some of the longest days and weeks of your life.

I read some where recently someone called it "paint prison."

BTW, I stayed with the original color.

If it's time and material, how much of a perfectionist do you want to payroll?? Labor rates range from $50 to $110 around here. How much time gets spent has many, many variables. So there is no one answer to the question! Work with some one that will work the hours that are needed and charge accordingly. Kiss your $ good-bye. Chip

The time component should not be overlooked. I don't know how many times I've heard nightmarish stories where the promised completion in months turned into years. The only way I'd have a Corvette painted is if I had owned nice classic car that I could drive and enjoy while my Vette was in the paint shop. This would be the only thing that would keep me from losing my mind while promise date after promise date passed by.

Ugh!

Hence the euphemism, "paint prison"

If you're not looking to try and top flight it why not buy the car and enjoy it. If you are able to buy it at a discount because of the wrong color, you probably won't suffer much more of a loss when you go to sell it. Sure would beat the cost of a repaint, not to mention all the stress involved .

I was orignally told my paint job would take six to eight weeks. It took five months.
