Default I have a loose screw! ##*&^%#

Well another unplanned expense jumped up and bit me in the wallet. My compressor motor shorted out when a screw found its way from the conduit box on top down into the windings. I bought my IR 60 gal compressor new 17 years ago and apparently this loose screw had been left inside when the motor was assembled. I find it mind boggling that it costs less to replace motor ($656) than to rewind ($860). My search for a used 5 horse motor has been in vain. I'm bummed and worked stopped.

You got off easy. It cost my $1763 last month to fix my A/C.....about $200 for the leak, and the other $1563 for 8 pounds of freon. Crazy stuff. But with temps at 111 degrees and 50% humidity, AC is life-saving.

Default Motor

I know you are in CO, however I have a friend that owns Tampa Electric Motor. I know he does rewinds etc. Fred's number is 813-247-2992. He rebuilt a lift motor for one of my friends and I know he does work for Tampa Ship. Maybe he can fix your motor or get you a used one. Mention Jerry and Daryle from Mobile Ultrasound. Jerry

Wow, 111 degrees! I hope that AC blows cold.

It does indeed! After two nights of no sleep in a 90 degree house, I found it easier to part with the $$$ than is usually the case!!!

Air compressor or a/c compressor? I thought you said it was a 60 gallon air compressor. $650 over 17 years for shop use isn't to bad. Replacements never last as long as originals.

Good catch! OP appears to be discussing his shop air compressor....not even AC related!

Very easy to diagnosis with a multimeter. Check the windings and determine if they are shorted or open. Also look for black melted insulation on the leads and winding. I everything checks good, the starting capacitor or overload may have taken the brunt of the screw shorting something out.

Today you have to be as smart as the service company to survive. My daughter paid over $4K to have the 8 year old furnace and A/C replaced in her house after I told her it was only the flue exhaust fan (about $180). Found there was a recall on the unit and they should have replaced it for free.

Guess she takes after her mother!!!

Ah, misery, well if it makes you feel better I appreciate the company, somehow it doesn't make me feel better as the other person in my life is applying a little different type of heat seeing this is a hobby. Time for a stay cool

Shaft diameter is 1 1/8 RPM 3450 230V 1 phase frame 184T
3 inch shaft length, key width 1/4" key length 2 1/4"
overall length of motor 16 1/2 inches
electrical termination S3 (top)
capacitor start and run
overtemp protected

This has as many spec details as a camshaft.

Thanks for the info Jerry, I will call and see if a used motor might be available, nothing on eBay or Colo Springs, or in Denver. Kinda think sending my 80+ pound motor both ways would be a deal breaker.

Yes this is an air compressor motor, my bad for not stating. The compressor is in my home garage so it does not see the work duty like a shop would. I think the electric motor should have outlasted me.

Ouch! I will add it helps if you are smarter or more knowledgeable than the service company. Now that I have stated that, I checked the three caps on my motor with a meter and they appeared to be OK. The run cap was labeled internally protected so me being the smart guy assumed it or maybe one of the others was breaking down under load so I just ordered new caps. Well $48 later and still having a short problem I decided to remove the motor end plate to look at the centrifugal switch. Well the obvious is also easy to diagnose. The photo on my starting post shows the blackened area where there are some winding's that burned open. The good news the centrifugal switch was good, me not so much.
Now you have me thinking I might be related to your daughters mother by DNA.

I apologize, after looking at your photo again, I think you are fried. Although the resistance check might still come in good, under a load the missing insulation is probably shorting out.
Have you tried Harbor Freight?? I have a friend that swears by their electrical motors and even gas engines.
