Carb: This hole shouldn't be there, right?
Hi All;
Recently, I performed a fuel line system upgrade and everything was running well.
Then, one day, I was getting a terrible gas odor when driving the car.
I thought I didn't tighten something; however, everything looks good.
I was looking at the carb and noticed that there was a hole in the back fuel bowl. (see the picture with the red circle)
That should be plugged up, correct?
Any idea why it would come loose and fall out?
Also, do you know what part I need?
My carb is a holley 1850-5/1580
Thank you

You are missing the site plug on the rear float bowl. It must not have been tightened enough. You definitely don't want to drive it like that. It should be easy to find, Summit Racing has them, part # HLY-26-13.

Thanks Dan, I just ordered it. Looks like I won't have it for a bit.
Can I temporarily plug it until it arrives? Duct tape or other screw? I can't believe that I sound like a Bubba now.
Thank you

Gas will wash away the adhesive from tape. If you have any car buddies you may be able to borrow one. Millions of Holleys have two of those plugs.

I'm not familiar with auto parts stores in Colorado but the chain stores here in Texas usually have a display with a lot of common Holley parts. It might be worth taking a look.

Don't forget to put the thin sealing washer between the bowl and the plug.
If you can't get out to LARs for his free plug, as stated above, try your local parts store.
If I remember correctly, Ford used Holly carbs under the motor-craft name for years.
Your local parts store may have a rebuild kit for the Holly or motor-craft carbs that may include new plugs and washers.

I have a correct plug laying right here on my workbench if you want it.
The other issue is, if the engine has been running with that plug missing, without spilling gas all over the engine, it means that your secondary float level is WAY off. Which means that the rest of your carb setup is also probably way off. If you bring the carb by, I'll set it up and test it on the test engine and put the plug in it for you.

I just PM'd you.
I tried to buy a rebuild kit and it doesn't include the plug.
It would be great to have you take a look. It looks like two of the barrels are blocked off.
Thank you!

Carb kits don't contain those parts. Sounds like someone has done a little "creative" work on your carb, so it needs a good checkout.
I don't know what a "PM" is, so just drop me an e-mail.

Greg is on his way over, so we'll let everyone know what we find on his carb...

The camera is on the workbench and ready... I'm betting we're going to find more than a missing plug...
